Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Gary Trent came off the bench to score a season-high 27 points and added a career-high 16 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 105-90 victory over the winless Los Angeles Clippers.

Trent, who entered the game averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 boards, scored 10 points during an 18-2 fourth-quarter run that gave the Clippers a 103-81 cushion with 2:03 remaining.

"I've been having some good fourth quarters lately," Trent said. "But the biggest thing is we finally, finally, finally got a win. I can't think of anything right now to describe it. I'm going to find a dictionary to put together some words to say how important it was to get a win."

Michael Finley also established a season-high with 31 points for the Mavericks, who ended their longest losing streak since a woeful 15-game skid last season.

"It's important to finally get the monkey off our backs," Finley said. "As a team we've been struggling. To get a win is good to see a lot of smiles around the locker room."

"It feels like 10 pounds have been lifted from my shoulders," added Dallas coach Don Nelson. "The longer losing streaks go, the more pressure everybody puts on themselves."

Eric Piatkowski scored 16 points and Darrick Martin and Rodney Rogers added 13 apiece for the Clippers, who are off to an 0-7 start. Los Angeles is still a safe distance from the worst start in franchise history. It began the 1994-95 campaign with 16 losses.

"We have to come out and get it in our minds that we're going to win this game," said Martin. "We just gotta find a way to win, it's the only thing that matters. We made a run, we got it down to four and we stopped making plays on the offensive end. We stopped making defensive stops and we didn't get rebounds. In crunch time, that's what this league is all about -- making plays."

"I'm not gonna get discouraged after tonight," added Piatkowski. "We have five games in the next seven nights. If you start getting down, you're in trouble. Some guys are getting down and we can't have that. The teams that are winning aren't rolling their eyes when they miss a shot or a pass. We just have to cut out the negativity."

Finley scored 17 points in the first half to help the Mavericks to a 48-45 lead. He converted a three-point play with 1:47 left in the third quarter to cap a 19-8 run that gave Dallas a 74-61 bulge.

Despite a rare three days off prior to tonight's contest, the Clippers lost to the Mavericks for the fourth time in the last five meetings.

After a sparkling 21-point, 20-rebound performance against Vancouver on Tuesday, Maurice Taylor was limited to 11 points and four rebounds. Los Angeles shot 45 percent (38-of-84) from the field but was just 10-of-18 at the line.

"Tonight's game was a slap in the face," said Taylor. "It was embarrassing to the team and to everyone. If this doesn't wake us up, what will?"

Point guard Steve Nash had 11 points and six assists for the Mavericks, who also shot 45 percent (41-of-91) and held a 54-41 advantage on the boards.

Cedric Ceballos had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Dallas, which held a 19-9 edge in second-chance points as a result of 17 offensive rebounds.

Lamond Murray, who entered the contest averaging a team-high 17.5 points per game, was held to six points on 2-of-8 shooting in 23 minutes.

"I don't like the way these guys didn't respond to the challenge," Murray said. "You see body language to the things that occur. These guys need to have more respect for one another. There is respect for the league, there should be that respect for one another."

Rookie Michael Olowokandi, the top overall pick in the 1998 draft, scored eight first-half points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Los Angeles, which committed 14 turnovers.

Dallas' heralded rookie, Dirk Nowitzki, continued to struggle. He was scoreless on 0-of-4 shooting in just nine minutes of action.
