Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley made sure the Dallas Mavericks did not blow a 17-point second-half lead, hitting two crucial jumpers and a pair of free throws in the final 81 seconds of an 89-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Finley, who scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, gave the Mavericks a four-point edge with a jumper with 1:21 to play and nailed a 19-footer as the shot clock expired to make it 87-81. He also made two free throws, giving Dallas an 89-83 advantage with 12 seconds left.

The Mavericks, who led 70-53 late in the third quarter, returned from a 1-6 road trip and snapped a four-game losing streak against Atlanta, which lost without leading scorer Steve Smith for the second straight game.

Smith, who led the team in scoring in each of the first nine games, was placed on the injured list after suffering a sprained knee in Saturday's victory over Philadelphia. Without him, Atlanta absorbed an embarrassing 77-68 home loss to hapless Chicago on Monday.

"It's a huge void to fill," Atlanta forward LaPhonso Ellis said. "There's guys that when we need a big shot or big plays that should come up with it but it just doesn't happen. But there's no excuse for us to lose the game's we have been losing. Our execution is terrible."

Mookie Blaylock picked up the slack in Smith's absence, scoring 22 points. But he missed his final four shots in an 84-second span late in the game.

Alan Henderson had 13 points and seven rebounds but was only 4-of-14 from the field for Atlanta, which shot 37 percent (32-of-86).

Dallas led 74-63 on a driving layup by Hubert Davis with 9:42 to go, but Hawks rookie Roshown McLeod scored the first four points of a 13-2 burst that closed the deficit to one with 5:47 left.

McLeod finished with 16 points in 22 minutes. He was on the floor in the final moments, drilling a runner with 36 seconds left to get Atlanta within 87-83. He also came up with a loose ball on the ensuing inbounds pass but missed a layup on a near foul under the basket.

"I just want to do anything that I can to make this team win," McLeod said. "We came up a little short tonight but if we continue to make the progress that we made in the second half and carry it over to the next game, then we can take it another step forward."

Dikembe Mutumbo had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Hawks, who have lost consecutive games after a 6-3 start. Atlanta continues its four-game road trip Thursday in Houston.

"These next couple of games, we can probably pull a couple out because we need them right now," McLeod said. "When we play together, that's when we're most effective. We just need to find the right vive to get the job done."

Dallas played at home for the first time since February 11 and only the third time this season. The Mavs are off Wednesday before playing on three consecutive nights.

"I thought we were on the road again," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Anyway, it was good to be home and it was sure nice to get a win, a hard-earned win, nonetheless a win.

"I think we can play a lot better than the way we've been playing. We found a way to scratch out this win so I think that's the important thing."

Robert Pack was a savior in the first half, scoring 13 of his 15 points to help Dallas erase an early eight-point deficit. He also had eight assists. Starting point guard Steve Nash finished with four points, five rebounds and four assists.

"The game gave us a lot of confidence," Pack said. "We came off a tough road trip and we came together tonight. I believe that we showed a lot of character to get this win."

Finley, who totaled nine rebounds and six assists, was 7-of-11 from the field and made all six free-throw attempts. His fellow starters combined to shoot 32 percent from the field (11-of-34).

Gary Trent contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for Dallas and Shawn Bradley added nine points, four boards and four blocks. The Mavs were outrebounded, 49-39.
