Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning had 20 points, 17 rebounds and five blocked shots against his former team, leading the Miami Heat to their seventh straight victory, 91-83 over the ailing Charlotte Hornets.

Mourning, who spent his first three seasons with the Hornets before being traded for Glen Rice, drained a 10-foot jumper in the lane with 96 seconds to play that extended Miami's lead to 84-79.

"The Hornets are a feisty club," Mourning said. "When you have them down, you have to keep them down. Otherwise they'll fight back. But as long as you leave with a `W', that's all that counts."

P.J. Brown, Tim Hardaway and Mark Strickland scored 13 points apiece for the Heat, who are unbeaten since losing to Boston on February 9. The winning streak is their longest since March 18-31, 1998, when they also won seven in a row.

"We got the `W' and that's all that counts," said Hardaway, who was just 4-of-19 from the floor. "They played good defense. We just missed some good shots. We missed easy shots that we normally make. We have to play hard every time because this team can go into a drought at any time."

Bobby Phills scored 20 points to pace Charlotte, which has lost six straight. The Hornets, who are off to the worst start in franchise history at 1-8, have been decimated by injuries.

"I thought we came out with a lot of energy tonight," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "They are just a relentless team. Mourning did a lot of damage inside to us."

Tonight's wounded included guards B.J. Armstrong, who is out indefinitely with knee problems, and Eldridge Recasner, who has an injured elbow. The Hornets already have lost forward Anthony Mason for the season with a ruptured biceps muscle and will be without Rice, their sharpshooting swingman, for five weeks following elbow surgery.

"We caught a team that was undermanned and they made it tough on us tonight," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "It was a mindless game on our part. We made a ton of mental mistakes but did enough to win."

Blue Edwards and Clarence Weatherspoon each scored 12 points for Miami, which shot 42 percent (33-of-78) from the field. The Heat held a 45-34 advantage on the boards, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive end.

The game, which featured nine ties and seven lead changes, swung in Miami's favor midway through the fourth quarter. Strickland converted a three-point play, Brown made a layup and Hardaway drilled a 3-pointer to give the Heat a 76-68 lead with 9:10 to play.

J.R. Reid collected 16 points, David Wesley chipped in 12 and Derrick Coleman added 11 and 14 rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 39 percent (27-of-69). The Hornets committed 15 turnovers, which the Heat converted into 23 points.

"We can't roll up the season because everyone else has," Reid said. "We're not the same team without Glen and Anthony, but what can we do? We have to play the game. We have pride and will play hard."

Weatherspoon canned a nine-footer to give Miami an 82-72 lead with 4:30 to go. But Charlotte went on a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Phills to cut the deficit to 82-79 with just under two minutes remaining before Mourning sealed the win with his jumper in the lane.
