Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Joe Dumars scored 14 of his season-high 26 points in the third quarter as the Detroit Pistons used their best defensive performance of the season en route to an 89-73 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dumars shot 57 percent (8-for-14) from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, as the Pistons won for the third time in four games following a five-game losing streak. Grant Hill had 11 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds as he battled a bruised hip.

"He's hurting," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said of Hill. "We're going to take a day off tomorrow. He really needs it, he's been hurting for about a week now. That's really tough for him because it's hard for him to post up."

Bison Dele had 13 points and nine rebounds and Lindsey Hunter also scored 13 points for Detroit, which lost three of four meetings with Cleveland last season. The Pistons have held their last three opponents under 90 points but their best previous defensive showing came in a 78-69 loss to New York on February 15.

Shawn Kemp had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Cedric Henderson added 12 points for Cleveland, which has lost its last two following a five-game winning streak. The Cavaliers matched their lowest point total of the season, a 77-73 loss to Boston on February 6.

"Joe D took over the game out there," Kemp said of Dumars. "He hit some big ones. Basically, our defense fell apart in the second half. We made some turnovers there at the start of the third quarter that you really can't have. That's probably our biggest defeat this year, just the turnovers."

Detroit shot only 39 percent (14-for-36) in the first half and trailed, 42-39, at the break.

Henderson made a pair of free throws 58 seconds into the third period to extend Cleveland's lead to 44-39. Dumars answered with a 19-footer from the left sideline with 10:17 left in the quarter and Hill followed with a 13-footer to pull the Pistons within 44-43 with 9:41 to play.

"It was a big win for us," Dumars said. "We've got a four-game homestand right now and we talked about the homestand before last night's game, and we just wanted to come out and get each one of these games. You have to shoot hundreds and hundreds of shots to feel comfortable. I put a lot of work into shooting."

Dumars made an 18-footer with 8:54 remaining in the third to give Detroit a 45-44 edge. The Cavaliers regained the lead on Henderson's layup with 5:54 left. Dumars responded with a 3-pointer to spark a 13-2 run that put the Pistons ahead for good. He capped the run with a 3-pointer from the right side for a 60-50 advantage with 2:52 left in the third.

Cleveland got no closer than eight points in the final quarter, shooting just 34 percent (11-of-31) after halftime.
