Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd overcame the flu to record his fourth triple-double of the season with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 16 assists as the Phoenix Suns rallied for a 94-86 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Kidd, who moved into sixth place on the all-time list Monday, posted his second straight triple-double and 23rd of his career. He added six steals for the Suns, who had a season-high 14.

Until tonight, Kidd was the only player with a triple-double this season. In earlier games, Sacramento's Chris Webber, Indiana's Mark Jackson and Houston's Scottie Pippen recorded triple-doubles.

"It was tied 84-all and I was really feeling bad," Kidd said. "I was trying to drink a lot of Gatorade to stop the intense dehydration. I started wondering if I was going to make it."

The Suns are 10-0 when Kidd has a triple-double, including 4-0 this year. His 16 assists tied a personal and NBA high this season.

"Our big guys did a good job in the fourth, battling well in the low post," Phoenix guard Rex Chapman said. "With Jason helping them grab the rebounds, it finally led to our running game and we were able to execute our offense from that."

The Suns erased a 76-67 deficit in the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run. Danny Manning hit a jumper and Champan made a 3-pointer to bring Phoenix within 76-72 with 7:51 left. George McCloud converted consecutive 3-pointers, giving the Suns a 78-76 edge with 6:36 left.

"We started making shots in that fourth," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "We got really hot to start the game and then we went about a quarter and a half where we couldn't made a shot. They took any inside game away from us and it was working until we caught fire."

After Chapman ended the spurt with a jumper, the Grizzlies tied it at 84-84 on Tony Massenburg's two foul shots with 3:16 left. Phoenix put away the game with a 9-0 run.

"We didn't take care of the ball at all," Vancouver guard Doug West said. "There were times we came down and didn't even get a look at the basket. They got so many opportunites to get second-chance shots and that's what started to fall for them."

After Cliff Robinson's dunk put Phoenix ahead to stay with 2:33 to go, Kidd's steal led to Robinson's two free throws 52 seconds later. Chapman drilled a 3-pointer and McCloud added two free throws, making it 93-84 with 37 seconds left.

"I stayed out there because we needed a `W' more than anything to start our road trip, but I'll get some rest now," Kidd said.

Chapman and McCloud each scored 16 points for the Suns, who fell behind 67-53 late in the third period.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and rookie Mike Bibby added 16 and 10 assists for the Grizzlies, who have dropped four of five.

"This is an inexcusable loss we had tonight," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We're just not going to have any more like this. "(It was) our inability to execute and make the rotations that we have to late in the game to get rebounds and stop turning the ball over at key times."

Vancouver used a 14-3 run and took a 14-point lead on a foul shot by Abdur-Rahim with 3:13 remaining in the third quarter. Kidd hit an off-balance 10-footer at the buzzer, pulling the Suns within 70-64 entering the fourth period.

The Suns shot just 41 percent (33-of-80) but converted 22 Vancouver turnovers into 23 points. Phoenix also made 20-of-26 foul shots.

Michael Smith added 11 points for Vancouver, which shot 44 percent (31-71). The Grizzlies made just 2-of-12 3-pointers while the Suns were 8-of-24.
