Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 14 of his 23 points in the third quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics got back on track with a 92-82 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Seattle entered with four losses in its last five games, including a 99-81 setback at San Antonio on Wednesday. But Payton triggered two third-quarter runs to help the Sonics improve to 7-1 at home this season.

He scored the final five points of a 14-2 spurt that provided a 60-50 lead with 7:13 to go in the third quarter. After San Antonio closed within 62-57, his 3-pointer triggered a 12-2 tear in which he scored nine points. Payton made 9-of-20 shots, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and added six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

"Gary started hitting some 3s. We haven't been in a groove like that for a while," said Sonics guard Hersey Hawkins. "It's good to see that we can finally be there at both ends of the floor. You don't want to lose three in a row. They beat us pretty soundly the other night. Now we have to establish ourselves on the road, we have to take that intensity out on the road."

Dale Ellis had 13 points and Olden Polynice contributed 12 and 10 rebounds for Seattle, which has won nine of its last 12 home games against the Spurs.

"Everybody picked it up a little bit," said Ellis. "We really wanted to beat this team. We didn't have any intensity at all, we were just a step slow (Wednesday), but we played a totally different game tonight."

After amassing 29 points and 17 rebounds in Wednesday's victory, David Robinson was held to 10 and 14, making only 2-of-9 shots from the field. Tim Duncan scored 22 points to lead the Spurs, who have lost three straight road games and are 2-5 away from San Antonio.

Duncan gave the Spurs their final lead at 48-46 in the opening minute of the second half, but Polynice and Baker hit jumpers to put Seattle ahead for good, 50-48, with 9:03 remaining. Hawkins hit a 3-pointer and Baker added a 17-footer to push the lead to seven.

Sean Elliott countered with a bucket for the Spurs, but Payton drilled a 25-footer and added a layup as the Sonics opened a 60-50 advantage with 7:13 remaining in the third quarter.

A 14-footer by Duncan pulled San Antonio within 62-57, but Payton sank another 3-pointer before a jumper by Elliott. Payton had a 3-pointer and a three-point play around a 3-pointer by Ellis as the Sonics opened a 74-59 lead with 58 seconds to go in the quarter.

"Our record is definitely not a good one," conceded Robinson. "We have to get our game together and play better basketball, it's on everybody's mind. I haven't found my rhythm with this team yet, I haven't been getting a lot of shots from the floor."

Seattle maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final period. Payton suffered a thigh contusion on his three-point play late in the third, appeared briefly in the fourth but did not return.

The Sonics shot 42 percent (37-of-88) from the field and hit 8-of-15 3-pointers. Payton and Ellis combined to make 7-of-11 from beyond the arc as Seattle overcame a 50-41 rebounding deficit and 23-10 disadvantage in free throws.

San Antonio shot 36 percent (28-of-78), making only 3-of-18 from 3-point range. Reserve Jaren Jackson was responsible for all of the Spurs' 3-pointers, but Mario Elie went 0-of-5 from beyond the arc. San Antonio committed 19 turnovers, leading to 24 points for Seattle.
