Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill has been lobbying for Bison Dele to become a bigger factor for the Detroit Pistons. Tonight, he did.

Dele converted a dunk off a pick-and-roll pass from Hill with 2.7 seconds remaining as the Pistons snapped the Miami Heat's seven-game winning streak with a 95-93 victory.

Hill dribbled to the top of the key, where he drew a pair of defenders, before dumping the ball down to Dele, who put in the go-ahead basket. Miami had a chance to win, but Terry Porter's 3-pointer banked off the rim as time expired.

"We rolled Bison to the basket, thinking he might get an opportunity for a dunk if they played it the way we thought they would," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "We called that play and it's a play that we use quite a bit. We thought they wouldn't let Joe (Dumars) pop and beat them. We knew they would try to trap Grant coming off a screen."

"It came down to that last play," Heat center Alonzo Mourning said. "I got nailed on the screen. I was thinking Grant was going to pull up, but Bison was there. It happened so fast."

Hill led a balanced attack with 22 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Dumars added 21 points and Jerry Stackhouse contributed 19 off the bench for Detroit, whose winning streak matches a season high. The Pistons also defeated Miami for the second time in three games.

Mourning had 29 points and nine rebounds to lead the Heat, who were riding their longest winning streak since taking 10 straight last season from February 13-March 1.

Already without injured small forward Jamal Mashburn, the Heat also lost starting point guard Tim Hardaway to a knee injury in the first quarter, although it did not appear serious.

Hardaway banged his right knee going after a loose ball. He played briefly in the second quarter before leaving with what was diagnosed as a bruise.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to play Sunday," Hardaway said. "It's just a bruise. I banged knees and shouldn't have played in the second quarter."

With the scored tied, 86-86, Stackhouse sank a 10-foot jumper to put the Pistons ahead with 1:52 to play. Mourning made a pair of foul shots 11 seconds later to pull the Heat even but Dumars drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner to put the Pistons ahead, 91-88, with 1:23 to go.

Dele's aggressiveness on the ensuing Miami possession proved costly. He fouled Porter, who was attempting a 3-pointer. A 79 percent free throw shooter, Porter made all three free throws to tie it with 68 seconds remaining.

Hill, who hit 9-of-15 shots, made a running to jumper to put the Pistons back ahead with 51 seconds remaining. But Clarence Weatherspoon and Porter each hit 1-of-2 free throws, the last coming by Porter with nine seconds left to even the score, 93-93.

The Pistons held a slim 38-37 lead in the second quarter before Lindsay Hunter's running jumper triggered a 14-5 surge that pushed the lead to 52-42 with three minutes left before halftime. Detroit led 59-49 at intermission.

Dumars made a free throw with 9:14 left in the third quarter, giving the Pistons their biggest lead, 64-51. But Mourning scored 10 points in the period as the Heat closed to 74-68 after three quarters.

Mourning was one of few Miami players who had good shooting nights as he finished 10-of-17 from the floor. The Heat shot just 41 percent (31-of-75), offsetting a 44-37 rebounding edge.

Dan Majerle's 3-pointer with 5:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, capped an 8-2 surge that gave Miami an 81-80 lead, its first since the opening quarter.

Stackhouse hit 7-of-10 shots for the Pistons, who finished at 47 percent (34-of-73) from the floor.
