Game Story

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Playing their third game in as many days and doing so without their leading scorer and the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft, it was no surprise that the Los Angeles Clippers suffered their most humiliating loss of the season.

Dikembe Mutombo and Mookie Blaylock both recorded double-doubles as the shorthanded Atlanta Hawks handed the winless Clippers their 12th consecutive loss, 103-74.

"We needed to take advantage of the Clippers' poor situation," said Mutombo. "They had nothing to lose and everything to gain. You have injuries, you have key people out, but I'm sure that they're going to win a couple of games."

The Clippers (0-12) are off to their worst start since losing a franchise record 16 straight games to start the 1994-95 season. Losing top scorer Maurice Taylor to a sprained knee during Thursday's loss to the Lakers did not help matters.

"We can't point to injuries," said Los Angeles coach Chris Ford. "We have to suck it up and step up. As a player, you have to look at this as a golden opportunity to get minutes and make it happen."

Add the fact rookie center Michael Olowakandi was placed on the injured list with a sprained left ankle, and the Clippers appear on their way to a club record for season-opening futility.

"He will be out a minimum of five games," Ford added. "He has had injuries before and has come back quick. Hopefully the time he is out will go by quick."

Mutombo had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Blaylock added 13 points and 11 assists for the Hawks, who shot a sparkling 54 percent (40-of-74) from the field in breaking the 100-point plateau for the first time in eight games.

Playing without injured starters Steve Smith and Alan Henderson, the Hawks jumped to a 25-16 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Atlanta has won nine straight games from Los Angeles since March 25, 1994.

Grant Long scored 15 points and Tyrone Corbin added 14 for the Hawks, who will attempt to post their first three-game winning streak of the season Monday when they visit Orlando.

Rookie Tyrone Nesby scored a season-high 17 points and Lamond Murray and James Robinson each added 12 for the Clippers, whose previous worst loss was a 95-73 setback against Vancouver on February 14.

"I'm still gonna play hard no matter if we're down 10 or 20," said Nesby. "But when the buzzer sounds and you look up at the score, it's hard. I want to win. I'd rather win and not play. It's no fun out there."

Los Angeles did manage to pull within 43-36 on a pair of free throws by Lorenzen Wright in the early moments of the second half. But Atlanta responded with a devastating 29-8 run, capped by Blaylock's 3-pointer with 2:22 left in the third quarter that opened a 72-44 cushion.

"I think our offense moved very well tonight," said Blaylock. "We've been getting into the flow early but coach got on us at halftime. Our intent was to come out at the start of the third quarter and put them away."

Atlanta's 76-47 lead after three quarters prompted coach Lennie Wilkens to give extended time to some of his reserves.

"I told the team that we're coming out to play," said Wilkens. "I don't care who we were playing, what kind of record they had. You just have to focus on the job we had to do. I told them if they weren't going to play, they were gonna sit."

"(The Clippers) are a loaded gun ready to go off," added Long. "We were in the rythym tonight. We got off to a good start defensively. We were able to put them away in the third quarter. That gave us an opportunity to play our bench and gave us a rest even though we don't play again for a couple of days."

Rookie Roshown McLeod and Anthony Johnson each scored 12 points in the extended garbage time and Chris Crawford added a career-high 11.

The Hawks had just eight giveaways after committing two turnovers in Thursday's victory over Houston.

"We were able to hold our turnovers down," added Wilkens. "I was pleased with that. We really moved the ball well tonight and got some good shots."
