Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn made a fallaway jumper at the buzzer as the New Jersey Nets snapped a six-game losing streak with a 99-97 victory over the Boston Celtics.

After Andrew DeClercq made 1-of-2 free throws to lift the Celtics into a 97-97 tie with 7.2 seconds to play, Eric Murdock missed a running jumper from the left sideline. The rebound went through New Jersey forward Chris Gatling's hands to Van Horn, whose eight-footer hit the side of the rim before falling through.

"Did any team in this league deserve the ball to bounce two times and go in more than us? We deserve that bounce," New Jersey coach John Calipari said.

"We had to win a game," he continued. We had to have a win. I don't care if it was the Harlem Globetrotters, we were winning that game. When you lose a whole bunch of games like we have, we know we're going to get criticism, the players and myself included, and I deserve it. I'm aware of the criticism but it's time for us to right our ship."

Van Horn missed six consecutive shots before the winning basket and finished 9-of-23 from the field. Nevertheless, the Nets won for the first time since February 16 and improved to 1-6 on the road.

"As soon as I let go of the ball I turned to the referee to make sure that it was out in time," Van Horn said. "It's not often you get a shot to hit the front iron, go straight up and go in, but we needed it badly."

Kendall Gill had 23 points and six assists and Kerry Kittles added 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for New Jersey, which was coming off a 101-92 home loss to Boston on Saturday. Van Horn had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jayson Williams tallied 10 points and 16 boards.

Antoine Walker had 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists and rookie Paul Pierce added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Boston failed to extend a 96-95 edge when Pierce missed a pair of free throws with 39 seconds to play.

"We allowed luck to come into it at the end. That's something we can't let happen," Walker said. "We played really hard and had the opportunity, but the bounce didn't go our way at the end."

Kenny Anderson, who scored 16 points, gave Boston the lead when converted a three-point play with 50 seconds remaining. Kittles missed a 23-footer before Pierce grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Williams.

After Pierce missed the foul shots, Gatling followed a miss by Van Horn with a layup to give the Nets a 97-96 lead with 19 seconds left.

Van Horn scored 14 points in the first half, when New Jersey shot 48 percent (21-of-44) and took a 48-41 lead.

The Celtics tied the game for the first time since the opening tip when Pierce drove for a layup to make it 59-59 with 5:33 left in the third quarter.

Gill made a pair of free throws with 4:27 remaining for a 63-61 lead and New Jersey maintained the advantage until Dana Barros hit a 13-footer to make it 68-67 with 2:17 to go. Kittles made a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left and the Nets took a 74-71 lead into the final period.

Boston did not regain the lead until Barros hit a 3-pointer for a 79-77 edge with 9:45 remaining. Two free throws by Murdock tied the game with 8:17 left and Gill folllowed with a driving layup for an 81-79 lead.

New Jersey's biggest lead in the final period was 89-83 on a pair of free throws by Gill with 4:55 to play.
