Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Grant Hill scored 17 points, Joe Dumars had 16 and Jerry Stackhouse 15 as the Detroit Pistons extended their winning streak to five games with a 108-78 romp over the Chicago Bulls, who suffered their worst loss at the United Center.

Hill also had 11 assists and grabbed eight rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 55 percent from the field and dominated throughout in winning five straght for the first time since a six-game winning streak from February 12-23, 1997.

"No matter how much you beat a team by it's only one game and one win," said Detroit coach Alvin Gentry. "We hadn't won here in a long time, it's nice to get one in Chicago. I think they'll continue to improve as a team."

Detroit's bench played 118 minutes and scored 45 points as the Pistons ended an 18-game losing streak at Chicago. The Pistons' last win at Chicago was a 106-81 triumph on March 16, 1990, when the Bulls played in Chicago Stadium and Hill was a senior in high school.

"It's good to win here," Hill said. "We haven't won here in a long time and personally it was nice. There's no comparison to the teams of the past here in Chicago."

Detroit took the lead for good when Don Reid's layup made it 5-4 and ignited a 10-0 run with 10:06 left in the opening quarter. Bison Dele capped the run with a layup and had eight of his 10 points in the first period when the Pistons had a 31-18 lead.

Rookie Corey Benjamin scored 15 points and Randy Brown added 14 for Chicago, which was coming off its first back-to-back wins of the season. The Bulls shot just 38 percent (31-for-82) in their worst loss since a 115-77 defeat at Philadelphia on January 11, 1995, shortly before Michael Jordan returned to the team.

"I thought we lacked aggressiveness tonight," Chicago coach Tm Floyd said. "When you are struggling to find your own indentity you can not forget to be aggressive. Tonight we've learned that lesson. After our game tomorrow night in Philadelphia we have three off days. I intend to have the guys work 80 percent of the time on defense."

Ron Harper had 11 points and Toni Kukoc tallied seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Chicago, which fell to 1-7 at home.

Lindsey Hunter, who had 13 points and seven assists, capped a 9-2 burst with a 22-footer to push Detroit's lead to 42-24 with 7:07 left in the second period.

The Pistons scored the first 10 points in the third, taking a 62-35 lead when Dumars hit a 3-pointer with 9:29 left. Dumars made 4-of-8 shots from behind the arc and rested in the fourth quarter.

The Bulls did not close the deficit under 24 points after Dumars capped the run and trailed 81-55 and the end of three periods.

With starters for both teams on the bench, Detroit took ts biggest lead when Corey Beck made a 10-footer for a 106-65 bulge with 2:48 to play.
