Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Nick Anderson scored 25 points and the Orlando Magic, the league's best home team, never trailed in coasting to a 93-76 over the Charlotte Hornets, one of the NBA's worst road squads.

Anderson buried two of his six 3-pointers during a pivotal 20-4 burst in the third quarter, which built Orlando's lead to 69-49 with 4:53 left. He scored eight points, while Isaac Austin and Horace Grant added six apiece in the run, after which Charlotte got no closer than nine points.

"I'm just playing basketball and having fun, that's all," Anderson said. "Keep the fun in and keep playing."

The surprising Magic improved the Eastern Conference's best record to 12-4 and went to 9-0 at home. They own the most home wins of any NBA team and joined Utah and Portland as the only squads with unbeaten home records.

Austin, who left the Los Angeles Clippers to sign with Orlando during the offseason, had his best game as a member of the Magic with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

"I knew it was going to be good (here)," Austin said. "We've got a great group of guys that have different talents, and they use their talents very well. I felt this was like Miami when I first went there. Other teams weren't expecting us to do well, and we'd come in and hit 'em."

Derrick Coleman totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Hornets, who fell to 0-6 on the road. The Clippers and the Denver Nuggets are the only other teams without a road win this season.

"We couldn't get over the hump. Every time we made a run at those guys, they held us off," Coleman said. "They have a real good team. They keep rotating bodies and guys come in fresh. Their coach has them playing well."

Improving to 11-0 when scoring at least 80 points, the Magic controlled the contest despite a mediocre effort by star guard Penny Hardaway. One day after being fined $7,500 by the NBA for criticizing officials, Hardaway handed out nine assists but scored only two points on 1-of-10 shooting. He entered the game second on the team behind Anderson at 16.3 points per contest.

Charlotte was within striking distance after halftime and Coleman's short jumper to open the third quarter cut the deficit to 49-45. But Austin answered less than a minute later with an 18-footer that triggered the decisive run.

Grant found Anderson for a 3-pointer before taking a feed from Austin and hitting a 19-footer that increased the lead to 56-45 with 9:18 remaining. The margin was 58-49 when the Magic reeled off 11 straight points.

Austin fed Anderson for a layup before Grant and Bo Outlaw both hit inside baskets. Anderson connected again from beyond the arc and Austin capped the burst with a 14-footer.

"I'm just relaxed and not letting anything bother me," said Anderson, who was 8-of-13 from the field. "Coach is telling me, `Nick, if you're open, shoot the ball.' It makes me feel good that coach has confidence in my shot."

"Sometimes I don't even go for the offensive rebound when he lets the ball go," Austin said of Anderson's shooting.

The margin was down to 73-62 after three quarters, but Darrell Armstrong helped put away the Hornets by scoring eight of his 10 points and handing out four of his eight assists in the final period. Orlando led by as many as 22 points in the fourth.

"We eventually got the job done and thank God, Darrell came in late and had a big night," said Magic coach Chuck Daly.

Grant had 10 points and Outlaw chipped in nine for the Magic, who scored 25 points off 22 turnovers by the Hornets.

Bobby Phills scored 14 points for Charlotte, which was outrebounded by a 41-34 margin and had just four second-chance points to Orlando's 14.

"It seemed like every time we got a run, we threw the ball away," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "Someone would go off on their own or want to dribble or want to get crazy. Put a little pressure on us and we did not handle it very well."
