Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers are riding a six-game winning streak -- their longest in over eight years -- after a 102-86 rout of the Chicago Bulls.

Matt Geiger and Theo Ratliff combined for all off Philadelphia's points during an 11-2 third-quarter run as the 76ers built a 19-point lead midway through the period and cruised to only their third win in the last 16 meetings with the Bulls.

"I was proud we won," said Philadelphia coach Larry Brown. "You always worry about games like this. We had some slippage, but that's to be expected."

Geiger finished with 21 points while grabbing a season-high 13 rebounds and Allen Iverson had 24 points and six assists for the 76ers, whose current winning streak is the team's longest since a seven-game roll from February 17-March 1, 1991.

"It feels great and it's good to win the way we need to win," Geiger said of the streak. "We're winning with defense, we keep stressing that. Guys realize that's what type of team we are and we can win that way. Every time we have lapses, it's because we got slack on defense."

Dickey Simpkins scored 18 points and Toni Kukoc added 16 for the Bulls, who have lost two in a row following a season-best two-game winning steak. The 76ers also were beaten by Chicago, 98-80, on February 25.

The Bulls own the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference, trailing only New Jersey and Charlotte.

"(The 76ers) create so much in terms of transition of their defense," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "We have a great awareness toward Iverson. They were a much improved team, they were outstanding defensively."

After trailing by 14 in the early moments of the third quarter, the Bulls cut the deficit to 51-41 on Randy Brown's jumper with 9:12 left in the period. But Chicago scored only two points over the next 3:05 as the 76ers put away the game.

"We haven't finished games the right way," added Larry Brown.

Tonight, that was not a problem. After a three-point play by Geiger, Brown hit a 13-footer. Geiger made two from the foul line and Ratliff threw down a dunk. Geiger added a 13-footer and Ratliff drove for a layup to make it 62-43 with 6:30 left in the quarter.

A driving layup by Kukoc with 4:43 remaining in the period brought the Bulls within 65-49, but Iverson scored the first three points of an 8-0 spurt and the 76ers took a 73-49 lead on Tim Thomas' 3-pointer.

The Bulls got no closer than 16 points in the fourth quarter as Philadelphia built its advantage to 24 points on Aaron McKie's driving layup with 6:24 to play.

"It's sinking in about the defensive aspect of it all," said Iverson. "We're playing great defense and it's showing more and more if we play defense, we have a great chance to win basketball games regardless of what team we're playing."

Thomas netted 13 points, rookie Larry Hughes had 11 and Eric Snow 10 and eight assists for Philadelphia, which converted 20 Chicago turnovers into 30 points. The 76ers shot 49 percent (40-of-82) and held a 41-35 advantage on the boards.

Simpkins grabbed eight rebounds and Kornell David had 10 points and five rebounds for the Bulls, who connected on 42 percent (32-of-76) of their field goals and went 20-of-30 from the foul line.

The 76ers slowly built an eight-point advantage after the first quarter and used two second-quarter runs to insure a large lead entering the half. Four players scored during an 8-2 run early in the period and Philadelphia took a 33-19 lead on Geiger's short jumper with 9:34 to go before the break.

George Lynch scored the final four points of an 8-0 burst, giving the 76ers a 43-27 lead with 3:23 to play in the quarter en route to a 49-35 halftime advantage.

"You have to come out with plenty of energy to overcome these deficits," said Kukoc. "Right now, we don't have the energy to come back or to actually play a game for 40 minutes."
