Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 23 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves survived a 4 1/2-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter and held on for a 102-93 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Garnett also grabbed eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who opened a 86-70 lead on Malik Sealy's jumper with 11:12 remaining. But Minnesota did not score again until the 6:53 mark as Vancouver stormed back.

"We're very poor at putting people away," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We have a tendency to get up and relax a little bit. You can't let the team back in the game and let the home crowd get back into it."

The Grizzlies ripped off a 12-0 run, pulling within 86-82 on Bryant Reeves' driving layup with 7:18 left. Felipe Lopez had seven of his 11 points in the spurt.

"We went out and played defense, concentrated on making proper rotations," Vancouver center Tony Massenburg said. "We also took the ball to the hole strong and got some guys to the foul line. I was pleased with the effort. We just came up short."

"The game is never over, especially at this level," Minnesota forward Joe Smith added. "We got lackadaisical in the second half. They made the run, but I think we did a good job of holding them off."

Stephon Marbury, who had 16 points and 11 assists, ended the drought for the Timberwolves by hitting a jumper as the shot clock expired. DeJuan Wheat answered with a 3-pointer to bring Vancouver within 88-85, but the Grizzlies got no closer.

"I had a nice night because Kevin and Joe played great down the stretch," Marbury said. "We came out and did what we were supposed to do at the end by making our free throws and attacking them. We got the 'W' and that's all that matters."

After Garnett's baseline jumper made it 90-85, the Timberwolves put the game away, scoring their next seven points from the foul line.

"I had to start swinging the ball, setting some picks and hitting some layups, so it'll make it easier on the guys to change the flow," Garnett said. "That's what I was doing the whole time."

Minnesota built its lead to 99-89 on Smith's follow shot with 54 seconds remaining. The Timerwolves were 27-of-32 from the line.

"For them to come back and put our guys in a pressure situation, it was nice to see our guys react in a positive way," Saunders said.

Smith added 19 points for Minnesota, which posted its 10th straight victory over the Grizzlies and increased its lead in the all-time series to 14-2.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Timberwolves, who shot only 21 percent (4-of-19) in the fourth but made 10-of-12 from the line. Anthony Peeler contributed 14 points against his former club.

Minnesota only shot 44 percent (37-of-84) from the field, but turned 21 Vancouver turnovers into 30 points, overcoming an early nine-point deficit.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and Massenburg and Reeves added 15 for Vancouver, which suffered its sixth straight loss and third in as many days. Coming off Wednesday's 109-86 drubbing at Utah, the Grizzlies have dropped nine of their last 10 games and lead only the winless Los Angeles Clippers in the Western Conference.

Rookie guard Mike Bibby scored just two points for Vancouver, but dished out 12 assists.

Abdur-Rahim hit a 3-pointer and completed a three-point play to give Vancouver an 18-9 lead with 7:14 remaining. Minnesota finished the quarter with a 22-10 spurt, taking a 31-28 edge into the second period.

"For the third game in three nights, I thought that the group we had out there early gave us some great energy," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "But we had six turnovers and they had three blocks in that second quarter. That got them up front and gave them some opportunities."

The Timberwolves exploded after Reeves' jumper pulled Vancouver within 38-37 with 8:82 left in the half. Minnesota ripped off a 22-4 run, grabbing a 60-41 advantage on Dean Garrett's two foul shots with 1:10 remaining.
