Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack and the Portland Trail Blazers used a decisive fourth-quarter run for their fifth straight win, a 97-85 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Arvydas Sabonis had 16 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists for the Blazers, who have won 10 of their last 11 overall.

Coming off a double-overtime win over the Utah Jazz and an overtime triumph over Sacramento, Portland found itself in another tight battle through the first three quarters, with neither team able to grab a double-digit lead.

But the Blazers took control in the final period with an 11-2 run, during which four different players scored. A 3-pointer by reserve guard Greg Anthony capped the burst, which gave Portland an 85-74 cushion with 6:15 remaining.

"It's important to have depth," Anthony said. "There's going to be nights when some people don't get it done, but collectively, we can still get the win. That's what happened tonight."

Five players scored in double figures for the Blazers (12-3), who are a half-game behind of the Utah Jazz (13-3) for the league's best record. Portland improved to 7-0 at the Rose Garden, joining the Jazz and the Orlando Magic as the NBA's only teams with perfect home records.

Stephon Marbury had 18 points and seven assists and Kevin Garnett scored 16 points for the Timberwolves, who also lost at home to the Blazers on Sunday and trail the all-time series, 32-5. Minnesota has lost 12 straight games at Portland since February 2, 1993.

"We knew what they were going to do," Garnett said. "It wasn't much different than when we played them at home last week. Portland made the pressure shots, and we didn't."

A jumper by Garnett had the Timberwolves within 74-72 with 9:14 to play. Walt Williams then fed Jim Jackson on an 18-footer that sparked the pivotal run.

A block by Wallace led to a dunk by Brian Grant, whose ensuing block of Joe Smith led to two free throws by Anthony that built an 80-72 advantage with 7:32 left. Wallace later hit a 15-footer before Anthony connected from beyond the arc, after which Minnesota got no closer than seven points.

"They were a little fatigued after playing last night, but we were, too," Wallace said. "We had to make that run. Winning makes everything better."

Grant scored eight of his 14 points in the final period and grabbed eight rebounds for the Blazers, who outscored the Timberwolves on the break, 15-3, and in the paint, 46-28.

"The inside scoring in the paint was the big difference in this game," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "We weren't able to finish off the plays on the break. We just couldn't turn the corner against them."

Sabonis scored eight points in the third quarter, when the Blazers grabbed the lead for good. A rebound by Sabonis led to Wallace's dunk, which put Portland ahead to stay, 50-49. Sabonis followed with a pair of free throws and later hit a long jumper to make it 54-51.

Damon Stoudamire, who had eight assists, fed Wallace for a layup that gave the Blazers a 62-53 lead with 5:28 left in the third. Marbury, who hit 5-of-19 from the field, scored six points in the period and helped bring the Timberwolves within 69-64.

Isaiah Rider contributed 12 points and Jackson added 10 off the bench for Portland, which made just 24-of-38 foul shots but held Minnesota to 37 percent (31-of-84) from the floor.

"We had some sluggish moments offensively, but we had our 'A' game defensively," said Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy. "Our defense carried us, and we did get to the free throw line."

Sam Mitchell scored 12 points and Smith had 10 and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have dropped four of their last five road games. Smith had four blocks and four steals, but shot just 3-of-14 from the floor.
