Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Rod Strickland posted season highs with 26 points and 15 assists as the Washington Wizards snapped a five-game home losing streak with an 86-85 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Strickland scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, including 11-of-12 from the foul line. He snapped an 81-81 tie and put the Wizards ahead for good by draining a pair with 1:10 to go and extended the lead to 85-82 with two more with 59 seconds to play.

"We all came through," said Strickland. "It wasn't just me. It was ugly but we played well enough to win. We needed this one."

The Wizards avoided losing six straight at home for the first time since the 1993-94 season, when they were the Bullets and played their home games at the USAir Arena.

The Hornets, who already have lost power forward Anthony Mason for the season and have been missing sharpshooter Glen Rice since he underwent offseason elbow surgery, suffered another setback when leading scorer and rebounder Derrick Coleman was pulled from tonight's lineup due to a sprained right foot.

"I'm proud of the way the team played," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "Guys stepped off the bench that usually don't play. The problem was too many turnovers."

J.R. Reid helped pick up the slack with 20 points and Charles Shackleford added 13 and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who dropped their third straight game to the Wizards. Coleman is listed as day-to-day.

"A month ago, I would have said (Shackleford) couldn't play in the NBA," added Cowens. "He's come a long way."

Juwan Howard had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Mitch Richmond added 15 points for Washington, which had lost five of its last six games.

"Every possession was a fight," said Howard. "We fought for every point. We made it harder than it was supposed to be, especially without Coleman. But we got the "W" which is most important."

"(Strickland) and Juwan came through big down the stretch," added Richmond. "It was a struggle all night. We couldn't find the momentum until the fourth (quarter). Hopefully, this will snowball."

Rookie Brad Miller matched a season high with 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who were playing their third game in as many days.

"We're definitely shorthanded," said Reid. "We are just trying to hold it down until we get guys back."

Washington forward Otis Thorpe missed tonight's game with a sore left knee. Terry Davis grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to help compensate for the lack of interior depth. Thorpe also is listed as day-to-day.

David Wesley collected 12 points and Chuck Person added 11 for the Hornets, who matched their season high with 23 turnovers.

Calbert Cheaney scored 13 points for Washington, which shot just 38 percent (31-of-80) and was outrebounded, 49-40. However, the Wizards' defense took control over the final eight minutes.

Washington held Charlotte to just two baskets over that stretch, including Bobby Phills' insignificant 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Hornets shot 42 percent (31-of-73).

Howard made consective jumpers to give Washington an 81-79 lead with 1:47 remaining. Person's tip-in knotted the game with 1:25 to play before Strickland made the game-deciding free throws.

Strickland made the play of the night midway through the fourth quarter. He hit an acrobatic layup with his back to the basket and drew a foul from Shackleford in the process. Strickland drained the ensuing free throw to pull the Wizards even at 73-73 with 7:05 left.
