Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Nick Anderson finally found his outside shot, just about the same time as his teammates found their touch from the foul line.

Anderson missed 11 of his first 12 shots but sank a critical 3-pointer and the Orlando Magic made 6-of-7 free throws in the final minute to hold off the Detroit Pistons, 87-82, and remain unbeaten at home. The Pistons had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Isaac Austin scored a season-high 23 points for the Magic, who uncharacteristically rode their frontcourt to their fourth consecutive win. In compiling a 10-0 home mark and the best record in the Eastern Conference at 14-4, Orlando has relied heavily on its guard rotation of Anderson, Penny Hardaway and Darrell Armstrong.

"The majority of the balls went to the big guys tonight," said Austin, who made 9-of-16 shots and pulled down nine rebounds. "We set screens on our guards and that opened up shots for us. On pick-and-rolls, they'd trap and that left us with open jumpers."

"I can't say enough about Ike," Pistons coach Chuck Daly said. "We've gone more and more to him on the low box."

Anderson again was a factor, but not until the final minutes. After a 1-of-12 start, he made a 3-pointer for a 71-66 lead with just under five minutes to play and added another for a 77-72 cushion with 2:11 remaining.

Baskets by Detroit's Bison Dele and Grant Hill sandwiched an inside hoop by Austin and pulled the Pistons within 79-76 with 1:24 left. Beginning with Austin's two free throws with 53 seconds to play, the Magic made 6-of-7 foul shots over the next 18 seconds, opening an 85-78 advantage with 35 seconds left.

Through the first three quarters, Orlando was just 6-of-13 from the line.

Bo Outlaw scored 14 points and Horace Grant added 11 and 11 rebounds for the Magic, picking up the slack for the guards. Hardaway scored 12 points, Armstrong 11 and Anderson eight as the trio combined to shoot 11-of-33 from the field.

"The chemistry on this team is unbelievable," Grant said. "It's all about teamwork. Our guards weren't up to par but they still did other things."

Outlaw also helped contain Grant Hill, who led the Pistons with 17 points but made just 8-of-19 shots. Hill also had his hands full at the defensive end.

"That's a challenge in itself, Grant Hill," Outlaw said. "You know he's going to get the ball. He can shoot, he can drive, he gets contact, he gets a lot of `and-ones.' You've got to play him the best you can."

"We tried to go small so that we could get another shooter out there and they took advantage of that," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "Grant Hill shouldn't be guarding Horace Grant, but we had to try to do that so that we could get more offense on the floor."

Jerry Stackhouse and Dele added 15 points apiece for Detroit, which shot just 36 percent (31-of-86) from the field.

Austin came out shooting jumpers and nearly outscored Detroit in the first quarter. He collected 12 points as Orlando raced to a 23-13 lead.

"Tonight I got an early start," Austin said. "I hit some jump shots, got some stuff inside, got Bison Dele in trouble. Coach kept calling my number so I tried to go at him."

"He played real well," Hill said. "We didn't double him and he made us pay. He had some great moves down low and made his free throws. He played big tonight."

Playing their fifth game in six nights, the Magic went cold in the second quarter, making just 3-of-19 shots. They managed one point over the first six minutes of the period and went to halftime with a 35-32 lead.

The Pistons trailed 56-55 after three quarters and tied the game at 72-72 with 3:31 left on a 3-pointer by Joe Dumars, who scored 14 points on just 5-of-17 shooting. Hardaway answered with a bank shot before Anderson's second 3-pointer.
