Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller overcame a right ankle injury to score 12 of his 16 points on 3-pointers and Rik Smits added 14 as the Indiana Pacers snapped the Miami Heat's four-game winning streak with an 85-72 victory.

Miller appeared to twist his ankle early in the third quarter but missed only one minute. He returned and fought through a limp to hit two key 3-pointers, including a heave from the left corner as the shot clock expired that gave Indiana a 56-43 advantage with 3:48 left in the period.

"We had to get that look in our eyes, especially against a team, we could be meeting in the playoffs," said Miller, who suffered a mild sprain and is not expected to miss any time. "It was a gut check for this team, as well as Miami has been playing lately, especially on the road. "

Indiana opened a 62-46 lead on Antonio Davis' jumper with 1:17 remaining and withstood a brief run by Miami early in the fourth period.

Coming off a stunning 102-83 home loss to Golden State, Indiana responded with its best defensive effort of the year and avenged an 89-78 home defeat to Miami on February 16. The Pacers lead the Central Division and tied the Heat for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference at 12-5.

"We played today," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "The last Miami game we were out of synch. Today, we kept playing, playing with authority, battled and went after loose balls. This is a big game and the guys came out and played."

"It was not a statement game, but it could be a message that we will take care of our home court," Pacers guard Jalen Rose added.

Alonzo Mourning had 17 points and 13 rebounds for Miami, which lost for just the second time in 13 contests and dropped 1 1/2 games behind first-place Orlando in the Atlantic Division. The Heat were held below 80 points for the first time this season.

"They played a very solid game," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We turned it over and didn't make shots. They didn't turn it over and made shots. They had a little more energy. They seemed a little more committed to the task."

"It's going to be between us and Indiana (for Eastern Conference supremacy)," Mourning added. "The Pacers came into the game with their backs against the wall and they really came to play."

Miami sliced into the deficit early in the final period as Mourning's dunk capped an 11-2 run that made it 64-57.

Travis Best answered with a 3-pointer and Rose completed a three-point play, giving the Pacers a 70-57 cushion with 8:11 to play. The Heat got no closer than nine in the final minutes.

Davis added 10 points for Indiana, which got strong play off the bench, outscoring Miami's reserves, 35-19, including 19-7 in the final period.

Tim Hardway scored 15 points and P.J. Brown added 12 for the Heat.

After Clarence Weatherspoon's two foul shots made it 70-59, Sam Perkins hit a 3-pointer and a layup, pushing Indiana's advantage to 75-59 with 6:29 to play.

"We needed this game to make sure things were continuing to go in the right direction," Perkins said. "I am not saying this because of the loss Friday, but we needed to send a statement to ourselves. We must be prepared to do this night in and night out."

The Pacers improved to 1-1 on their six-game homestand.

"Hopefully, this game will motivate us and move us to play well on this homestand," Miller said.

Indiana shot just 42 percent (33-of-78) from the field but made 12-of-13 from the line. Miami also shot 42 percent (27-of-65), but was just 16-of-41 in the first half and trailed 41-32 at the intermission.

Terry Porter's 3-pointer pulled Miami within 33-30 with 2:42 left in the half but Smits scored six of Indiana's next eight points to provide a nine-point halftime cushion.
