Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Sam Mitchell hit three free throws in the final 67 seconds, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to an 88-77 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Timberwolves have won three of their last four games with Garnett leading the squad in scoring each time. Malik Sealy added 18 points as Minnesota defeated Seattle for only its fifth win in 37 all-time meetings. The Timberwolves improved to 4-5 on the road.

Minnesota led 80-73 when SuperSonics veteran Dale Ellis ran into Mitchell 20 feet from the basket with three seconds on the shot clock and 1:07 remaining. Mitchell made 1-of-3 free throws, including a technical foul assessed to Ellis, who had been on the officials most of the fourth quarter.

Gary Payton hit a layup to pull Seattle within 83-77 with 43 seconds left, but Mitchell's two free throws a second later sent the Sonics to their third straight loss.

"This is an urgency game," Garnett said. "Our last couple of games have been very close games. The ones we have lost, we had to come out and be aggressive in the first. Our goal tonight was to come out aggressively."

Garnett finished with a team-high seven assists and discussed the point-guard aspect of his game.

"It lets me know I got the right people the ball," Garnett added. "It lets me know that Steph's (point guard Stephon Marbury) not only dishing out. He's finding people, but I'm also sharing the ball. Even better, guys are knocking them down."

Payton finished the contest with 20 points, but made just 9-of-27 shots. Seattle shot 4-of-23 from 3-point range, including 1-of-11 in the final 24 minutes.

The SuperSonics fell to 2-3 in their last five home games after starting 5-0 in KeyArena. Seattle dropped to 3-6 against teams whose winning percentage is at or above .500.

"It wasn't pretty and its getting to be more like a trend," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "In the league you have to play 48 minutes and not quarters. Even when we were playing great defense they were still getting their shots. That seemed to cause our offense to go flat."

Minnesota scored the final seven points of the first quarter to grab a 23-18 lead. Sealy scored six points in the quarter and Bill Curley closed out the run on a 3-pointer with three seconds left.

The Timberwolves doubled that advantage in the second period as Sealy's jumper with 10:49 remaining closed a 6-1 run at 29-19. Sealy finished the half with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting to give Minnesota a 45-35 lead.

Garnett opened the second half with a basket before Seattle roared back with 12 straight points, capped by Hersey Hawkins' 3-pointer that tied the game at 47-47 with 7:59 left in the third quarter. Billy Owens scored four points in the spurt.

The Timberwolves ignored the KeyArena crowd as they closed the period with a 7-3 spurt for a 67-60 lead. Mitchell scored five points in that run.

"We moved the ball extremely well," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "We had great bench play tonight. We played with a bit of energy and a lot of confidence. When we move the ball like that, we are very hard to defend."
