Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns wiped the floor with the Dallas Mavericks, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 103-91 victory.

Cliff Robinson scored 11 of his 18 points in the final period for Phoenix, which had to wait 70 minutes before taking the floor and posting its eighth straight win over Dallas.

The game was delayed due to a filmy solution on the court. Players came out for pregame warmups but found the court slippery and returned to their locker rooms. Maintenance personnel spent the next hour wiping and mopping the court.

Mavericks president Terdema Ussery said the game could not be postponed due to the compressed NBA schedule created by the lockout. Referee Bennett Salvatore finally deemed the court safe and issued a statement at halftime.

"There was some type of film on the floor that simply made the floor slippery," Salvatore said. "We just didn't want to start the game until we were as sure as possible that the floor was as safe as possible."

"They did a good job of getting the court decent enough for us to play the game," said Suns forward Danny Manning.

Despite Salvatore's proclamation, Mavericks coach Don Nelson gave his players the option to not play, citing health hazards. Guard Robert Pack was the only Maverick who chose not to play.

"I know the way I play -- fast, quick cuts, and I couldn't get any traction," Pack said. "I just didn't feel comfortable playing. I cut quick, and I was sliding out there.

"Tonight, the conditions weren't comfortable for me. It just wasn't good enough for me to play. I know I'm not the only one, but I made a decision I felt comfortable with."

Phoenix did not allow Dallas to slip back into the game. Leading 83-77 with 6 1/2 minutes to go, the Suns took control as Manning sank back-to-back jumpers. A 3-pointer by former Sun Steve Nash pulled the Mavericks within 89-84 with 4:46 to play but Robinson responded with a 3-pointer of his own to trigger the decisive 12-1 run.

Robinson highlighted that burst with a pair of long jumpers and a follow slam by Chris Morris capped it, giving Phoenix a 101-83 cushion with 1:28 to go.

George McCloud contributed 17 points and hit all three of his 3-pointers in the second quarter, during which the Suns erased a 13-point deficit.

"Once the delay got out of the players' heads, it seemed like the game went on," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "We all forgot about it, and didn't even think about it after the first quarter."

Michael Finley, another former Sun, had 22 points and a season-high 12 assists to lead Dallas, which has lost four in a row.

"The floor is no excuse. The coach gave us an option, if you don't want to play, don't play," Finley said. "We got our butt whipped tonight. For some reason, we didn't have the effort."

Finley scored 13 points in the opening quarter, helping the Mavericks take a 27-20 lead. A pair of baskets by Samaki Walker and a tip-in by Shawn Bradley built a 33-20 advantage in the early stages of the second period.

The margin was 35-24 with just over nine minutes left before halftime when the Suns reeled off 13 straight points to grab their first lead since the opening minutes. Former Maverick Jason Kidd fed McCloud for a pair of 3-pointers in that burst, which Manning capped with a layup for a 37-35 lead with 6:07 left.

Kidd had 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and no turnovers as he played without usual starting backcourt mate Rex Chapman, who sat out with a bruised right calf.

"They were up 13, and this team (Phoenix) tends to play better when they're behind," Kidd said.

Luc Longley scored 16 points and Manning added 14 and eight rebounds for the Suns, who hit 9-of-13 3-pointers. The Mavs made just 4-of-15 from beyond the arc.

"Just when they would start to make a run, Cliff or George or Jason would hit a 3-point shot and that kept us in the lead," Ainge added.

Nash and Walker scored 15 points apiece, Gary Trent added 13 and Bradley set season highs with 12 and 14 rebounds.

"I don't blame anything on the delay," Walker said. "The fact is, it's our job to come out and be ready to play and we weren't."
