Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Tim Hardaway scored 21 points and Alonzo Mourning added 16 and 12 rebounds as the Miami Heat used a big third quarter en route to their eighth straight home victory, 88-78 over the Atlanta Hawks.

Hardaway gave the Heat a 42-40 halftime lead with a 3-pointer that beat the buzzer. He scored six points during a 16-2 run to open the third quarter, extending Miami's advantage to 58-42 with 6:36 left.

The Heat outscored the Hawks 24-10 in the third period and have not lost at home since a 108-101 setback to Boston on February 9.

"I thought the third quarter was one of the best from an offensive standpoint," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We came out of the locker room and committed defensively. We're starting to establish something (at home). We have to win here, especially in a short season."

P.J. Brown scored 14 points and Dan Majerle added 10 for Miami, which has won five straight against Atlanta at home since April 21, 1996.

Chris Crawford collected a season-high 14 points off the bench and Steve Smith added 13 for the Hawks, who have dropped four of their last five games. Atlanta has averaged just under 75 points in the four losses, while scoring a season-high 114 in a victory at Orlando on Monday.

"The first group played real slow," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "But the second group I put in did a nice job. The Heat had another run on us and we just didn't have enough to take us over the top. We need to simplify the offense and get back to basics."

Atlanta's Alan Henderson was ejected with 2:23 to play after slamming Hardaway to the ground in obvious frustration.

Grant Long scored 12 points and LaPhonso Ellis added 10 for the Hawks, who shot 40 percent (32-of-80) and held a 45-42 advantage on the boards.

Mourning did an outstanding job of guarding fellow Georgetown alumnus Dikembe Mutombo. He held Mutombo to just four points on 1-of-9 shooting.

"Today we started out aggressively, but we shot the ball poorly," said Mutombo. "We couldn't get the ball to fall. I didn't get a lot of good looks. There will be a game tomorrow so you can't get down. (Mourning) will be a top candidate for Most Valuable Player."

Keith Askins did a stellar job of holding Smith, Atlanta's leading scorer at 20.9 points per game, to 5-of-13 shooting.

"Keith without a doubt is a defensive stopper," said Mourning. "He takes pride in that. It's hard to guard 1-on-1 in this league, that's why we have a help defense."

The Heat shot 42 percent (30-of-71) and made 8-of-15 3-pointers. Hardaway led the way by draining 5-of-8 from behind the arc.

"They gave me space," said Hardaway. "If you give me room I'll take it."

Miami's Terry Porter scored nine points off the bench in his 300th consecutive game. Porter ranks third behind Dallas' A.C. Green and Seattle's Hersey Hawkins for the longest streak among active players.

After Majerle hit three free throws to open the second half, Mourning buried a 16-foot jumper to give Miami a 47-40 lead with 11:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Hardaway hit a 3-pointer, Brown a layup and Askins drained a 25-footer to open a 55-42 bulge with 8:56 left. Hardaway capped the decisive run with another 3-pointer with 6:36 to go.

"(Hardaway) always has the green light to take those shots," added Riley.
