Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon scored a season-high 31 points, including several key baskets down the stretch, as the Houston Rockets handed the Vancouver Grizzlies their 10th straight loss, 102-91.

Charles Barkley had 24 points and 16 rebounds for the Rockets, who have won four of their last five games and all three meetings with the Grizzlies this season.

"I thought `Dream' was a tower of strength inside," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I really felt like he had his rythym and confidence. Charles got some blue-collar offensive rebounds for us. He was right down in the trenches where he outwilled everyone else for the ball."

Olajuwon was 8-of-8 for 17 points in the first half, helping the Rockets jump out to a 54-47 lead at the break.

But the desperate Grizzlies would not go away. Vancouver, which has not won since a 93-83 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on February 23, pulled within 86-83 with 3:06 to play.

Olwajuwon hit a five-foot hook shot, a free throw and a jumper in the lane during a 7-2 spurt as the Rockets opened a 93-85 cushion with 1:31 left.

"My knee is getting stronger every day and that is helping me get elevation for my hook," said Olajuwon, who missed 34 games due to a knee injury last season.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 27 points and rookie Mike Bibby added a season-high 26 for the Grizzlies, who had not dropped 10 in a row since a 13-game skid from December 26, 1997-January 16, 1998.

"We played Houston a lot early this year and this was our best go-around against them," Bibby said. "We made a few mistakes at the end and that really hurt us. We have to learn to make better decisions."

Rookie Cuttino Mobley scored 17 points for the Rockets, who made a pregame deal with the Grizzlies, swapping swingman Rodrick Rhodes for guard Sam Mack.

Houston holds a commanding 13-2 lead in the all-time series.

Rookie Michael Dickerson made a layup to give the Rockets a 75-64 cushion with 10:54 to play.

Pete Chilcutt hit a layup, Lee Mayberry drained a 3-pointer and Bibby drilled a running jumper to pull the Grizzlies within 75-71 with 9:11 left.

Barkley, who was 12-of-13 at the line, answered with a layup and thunderous dunk off a feed from Olajuwon to make it 79-71 with 7:55 to go.

"I don't know if we played great, but we won," said Barkley. "I never complain about a win. I don't think we played bad but we didn't play great."

Bibby scored six of the Clippers next 12 points as Los Angeles closed to 86-83 before Olajuwon took over.

Olajuwon grabbed 10 rebounds for the Rockets, who held a 49-35 advantage on the boards. Houston forced 14 turnovers, including 12 in the second half.

"They beat us soundly on the boards in the second half," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We also gave them too many second-chance opportunities. It's hard to play a team like the Rockets when you have 12 turnovers in the second half."

Abdur-Rahim was 11-of-16 from the field and held Scottie Pippen in check throughout, limiting the All-Star swingman to six points of 2-of-12 shooting in 41 minutes.

"I was trying to play hard and help my team win tonight," Abdur-Rahim said. "When I play against Scottie Pippen, I know that nothing is going to come easy and I have to compete the whole game."
