Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- That's one.

After matching an NBA record by losing their first 17 games, the Los Angeles Clippers finally put together an all-around team effort to notch their first win of the season, 106-92 over the Sacramento Kings.

Lorenzen Wright grabbed an NBA season-high 25 rebounds and Darrick Martin led seven players in double figures with a season-high 18 points as Los Angeles avoided standing alone as the team with the worst start in league history.

The Clippers will instead be linked with the expansion Miami Heat, who dropped the first 17 games in franchise history to open the 1988-89 season.

Los Angeles seemed to have matters at hand after running to a 66-52 lead at the half, but nothing worth having comes easy and the Kings rallied to pull within 80-75 at the end of three quarters. They cut the lead to 91-88 midway through the fourth.

With the Clippers' faithful feeling a record-breaking loss and another monumental fold, Martin canned a 3-pointer and Eric Piatkowski, who finished with 16 points, drained another from long range to make it 97-88 with 4:23 to go.

Vlade Divac scored 19 points and Chris Webber and Lawrence Funderburke each added 17 for the Kings, who have lost seven of their last 11 games.

Lamond Murray scored 15 points, rookie Tyrone Nesby and Maurice Taylor collected 13 apiece and Wright added 12 for the Clippers, who dominated play on the interior by outrebounding the Kings, 58-35.

Vernon Maxwell contributed 10 points off the bench for the Kings, who shot 43 percent (33-of-77), including a 4-of-17 performance from 3-point range.

Nesby's eight-footer gave Los Angeles a 72-54 bulge with 9:32 left in the third quarter. But Sacramento responded with a 15-2 run capped by Tariq Abdul-Wahad's driving layup with 4:32 remaining that cut the lead to 74-69.

The Clippers were 8-of-18 from beyond the arc, including a 4-of-7 performance by Piatkowski.

Martin also handed out a season-high 11 assists for Los Angeles, which scored 19 points off 13 Sacramento turnovers.

Wright's emphatic slam with 4:08 left in the first quarter gave the Clippers an early 21-7 lead as well as an indication that he would be an inside presence throughout the contest. Wright canned a 15-footer to stretch the advantage to 62-45 with 1:25 remaining in the first half.
