Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill scored 33 points on 11-of-14 shooting, leading the Detroit Pistons to their sixth straight home win, 93-83 over the Boston Celtics.

Detroit took control with a 20-3 run over a 6:20 stretch of the fourth quarter, opening a 91-81 lead with 2:04 left. The Pistons closed the spurt with 10 straight points, including seven from Hill.

Hill finished the quarter with 13 points, including a breakaway dunk that put Detroit ahead 89-81 with 2:30 remaining and had the crowd roaring in approval. Hill has led the Pistons in scoring in their last six games.

The Pistons held a decisive advantage at the free throw line, connecting on 73 percent (29-of-40) while the Celtics missed 9-of-16 foul shots.

"This was a true team win," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "Everyone made plays at the end and Grant just took the game over on offense. Our defense down the stretch was as good as we have had all year."

Detroit jumped to a 24-19 lead after the first quarter, as Jerry Stackhouse made four throws during a 6-2 run to close the period. He finished with 18 points.

The Pistons extended the advantage in the second quarter, using a 17-2 spurt over a five-minute stretch to build a 47-34 lead with just over a minute before halftime. Stackhouse finished that run with eight points and netted 14 in the half as Detroit led at intermission, 48-39.

Boston got back into the contest with a 14-0 burst in the third quarter. Walter McCarty scored five points during the run, which put the Celtics ahead, 60-59, with 2:39 left.

"We thought we had control of the game in the third quarter, but in the blink of an eye, we're losing going into the fourth," Hill said. "In the end, it's like another basketball game. The team that wins is the team that plays the best over the last five or six minutes."

Antoine Walker finished with 22 points for the Celtics, who have lost the first four of a five-game road trip. Walker has been Boston's leading scorer the past four contests.

"I think if we play like this without the late defensive lapses, we're going to win a lot of games this year," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "I'd rather blame it on poor defense than our poor shooting. I thought our defense was going to get better, we just ran into a great player that overpowered us."
