Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon continued his resurgence, Charles Barkley reached a milestone, Scottie Pippen dominated in the fourth quarter and the hot-shooting Houston Rockets kept rolling with a 100-89 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Olajuwon scored 24 points and has led the Rockets in each game of their three-game winning streak, averaging 25 points in that span after an early-season slump.

"I'm progressing as the season progresses," Olajuwon said. "I feel much more comfortable and I'm getting into the flow of the game better. I'm comfortable and feeling stronger."

Barkley joined Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players in league history with 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists. Barkley, who needed one assist to accomplish the feat, collected 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

"It's a real great honor and I'm glad it's behind me," Barkley said.

Pippen scored half of his 16 points in the final period, when the Rockets saw their lead shrink to four before pulling away. Pippen added 10 assists and eight rebounds as the Rockets won for the fifth time in their last six games.

Brent Price had a key 3-pointer in Houston's crucial 7-0 spurt midway through the fourth quarter and finished with 17 points and six assists.

Shawn Kemp scored 25 points and Derek Anderson added 23 for the Cavaliers, who were coming off two days rest but could not build on their impressive 13-point victory in Phoenix on Wednesday. They fell to 2-6 on the road and missed their chance to get back to .500, dropping to 8-10 overall.

"When you play a good team like Houston, and they have some veterans, you know at the beginning that they are going to get the benefit of the doubt with the fouls," Kemp said. "And that takes away some of your aggressiveness."

Olajuwon had six points in 12-0 burst midway through the opening quarter to take the lead for good. Rookie Michael Dickerson capped that run with a 3-pointer for a 20-8 lead with four minutes remaining. Olajuwon had 10 points in the period and Dickerson scored all nine of his points, helping Houston grab a 27-14 advantage.

The Rockets remained in control in the second period, taking a 54-36 halftime lead. They hit an impressive 65 percent from the field (24-of-37) in the first half while limiting the Cavs to 38 percent (16-of-42).

"We were really clicking in the first half," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We did a very good job of executing on offense. We made our outside shots tonight."

Houston hit just 6-of-14 shots in the third quarter as Cleveland chipped away. The Cavs opened the period with a 21-6 burst, capped by Kemp's 16-footer that cut it to 60-57 with 5:25 left. Olajuwon answered with a three-point play and Pippen drained two 3-pointers later in the quarter, helping Houston take a 74-67 lead into the final period.

"The beginning of the second half, we did a terrible job offensively," Barkley said. "We kept pounding the ball inside every time and that makes us stagnant. We need to be more complete offensively and do a better job of using Scottie and Michael Dickerson."

"We got it down to four points, but every time we got it down to that, it seemed like Scottie came up with a big play and we couldn't get over the hump," said Cavs coach Mike Fratello.

Pippen opened the final period with another 3-pointer, creating a 10-point cushion. The Cavs came back again, with Anderson hitting a 3-pointer and layup around two free throws by Kemp to make it 80-76 with 8:53 to go.

The margin was 84-80 three minutes later when Price hit a back-breaking 3-pointer. He added two free throws before rookie Cuttino Mobley's layup pushed the lead back to double digits.

"I had a really good look when the ball was kicked out to me," Price said. "One of the things I'm supposed to do is knock down the open 3s and it was a really big shot for us."

The Rockets owned a 38-28 advantage on the glass and made eight 3-pointers, atoning for their 22 turnovers.
