Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics gave the Los Angeles Clippers a glimpse of a rare victory before squashing that hope in the fourth quarter.

Gary Payton scored 28 points and handed out 11 assists as the SuperSonics continued their home dominance of the Clippers, holding them to just two baskets in the fourth quarter of a 108-89 victory.

After Eric Piatkowski made a layup to bring the Clippers within 81-77 with 9:54 remaining, Seattle held Los Angeles without a basket until Maurice Taylor's layup with 12 seconds to play. Los Angeles made just 2-of-13 shots over the final quarter.

"We were right in the game for three quarters," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "The Sonics shot a high percentage throughout the course of the game. We were still right there. In the fourth quarter, they were turning up their defense and not allowing us to run our sets and our guys just settled for the long-distance shot."

Vin Baker made a pair of free throws to give the Sonics an 83-77 adavantage before rookie Tyrone Nesby sank a pair of foul shots for the Clippers. Hersey Hawkins scored five straight points, giving the Sonics an 88-79 lead with 8:43 remaining. The Clippers got no closer than eight points thereafter.

Baker scored 23 points and Dale Ellis added 17 for Seattle, which improved to 35-2 at home against the Clippers since they moved to Los Angeles in the 1984-85 season. Seattle also has claimed the last nine home meetings with Los Angeles since January 25, 1994.

Piatkowski scored 21 points to lead Los Angeles, which has lost consecutive games after snapping its 17-game losing streak on Thursday.

"We just couldn't get anything going," said Piatkowski. "That's kind of been our problem to start the season. We always play a good three quarters but there is always a time period where our offense might go stagnant."

The Sonics still led by nine points with just under five minutes remaining before Detlef Schrempf scored six of Seattle's next seven points to extend the lead to 100-84 with 2:20 remaining. Schrempf finished with 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

It was the Baker and Payton show for the Sonics in the first half. The duo combined for 31 points in the opening half, helping Seattle to a 52-48 advantage.

Payton connected on 12-of-19 shots and Olden Polynice was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor as the Sonics shot 57 percent (42-of-74).

Baker was 8-of-19 from the floor and also made a surprising 7-of-8 free throws. He came into the contest shooting only 33 percent (26-of-78) from the line.

"I feel like I'm back. When you're not worried about your free throws, you're a little bit more aggressive offensively," Baker said. "I wasn't worried about getting into the paint. I kind of wanted to go to the line. I kind of felt like they were either going to foul me or I'm going to beat them. That's the feeling I had, the feeling I had last year."

Seattle coach Paul Westphal also seems to think Baker has got his game back.

"I think Vin Baker is all the way back," he said. "He had a great game against Chicago and everybody pretty much sensed that he was going to play like Vin Baker is used to playing. Tonight, he backed it up and it makes a big difference for us. When he plays like that, it makes it easier for everybody."

A driving layup by Darrick Martin capped a 10-4 run by the Clippers, who led 71-68 with 2:43 left in the third quarter. But the Sonics were able to finish the quarter strong and take a 77-75 lead heading into the final 12 minutes.

Despite their horrid fourth quarter, the Clippers still shot 46 percent (35-of-76).
