Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Mitch Richmond scored 23 points and Juwan Howard added 20, 11 rebounds and seven assists as the Washington Wizards defeated the disorganized Milwaukee Bucks, 98-86.

With both teams without their starting point guards, Washington was able to cope better than Milwaukee. The Wizards played their fifth straight game without Rod Strickland, out with a strained groin. The Bucks played without newly acquired Sam Cassell, who has been sidelined for much of the season with a sprained ankle.

"We just didn't finish our plays," Bucks coach George Karl said. "In general, we weren't playing a defensive-minded game. I'm disappointed. We have not been able to put it together. We do it at home. We have some players out, but that's no excuse."

"I think we're just trying to find our new identity," Milwaukee guard Ray Allen said. "The guys that we have, they can play. We have to mold ourselves."

Jeff McInnis and Chris Whitney again filled in for Strickland and directed a controlled offense that committed just eight turnovers. McInnis started and contributed seven points and three assists. Whitney came off the bench and collected nine and five in a season-high 27 minutes.

"I know my role and I just have to be prepared," Whitney said.

With Vinny Del Negro and Ray Allen at the point, the Bucks had 16 turnovers as they dropped to 0-2 since making a pair of deals at Thursday's trade deadline.

"I don't mind playing point guard. I just have to learn how to pick and choose my spots," Allen said.

Otis Thorpe and Tracy Murray scored 10 points apiece and Ben Wallace grabbed 13 rebounds for the Wizards, who overcame an early 14-point deficit and defeated the Bucks for the ninth time in the last 12 meetings.

"We got off to a real bad start and they (reserves) came in and energized everything," Richmond said. "Wallace, Tracy, Whitney, they won this game. They did the little things."

"The bench was what won this game today," Howard said. "We also got it done in all four quarters, or at least 3 1/2."

The Bucks started quickly, racing to a 23-9 on a dunk by Armen Gilliam with 5:14 left in the first quarter. The Wizards called timeout and regrouped, scoring 22 of the next 26 points to take the lead for good.

Richmond scored nine points and Howard eight in the burst, which was capped by Whitney's 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining.

"We didn't know what was going on," Richmond said. "We decided to start playing defense after the TO."

The Wizards led 50-44 at halftime and pulled away with a 7-0 run late in the third quarter. Howard and Thorpe sank jumpers before Whitney hit another 3-pointer to make it 71-57 with 2:04 to go.

A jumper by newly acquired Tim Thomas pulled Milwaukee within eight points with 8:44 to play, but Murray drilled a 3-pointer and Washington never was threatened again. Murray scored nine points in the final period.

"Everyone touched the ball," Murray said. "It was the first time I have felt comfortable in a long time."

Wallace scored nine points and blocked two shots for the Wizards, who shot 41 percent (36-of-88) from the field, including 8-of-18 from 3-point range.

"I'm making myself be more aggressive and trying to get in there," Wallace said. "Our only problem is we need to be consistent. We're up and down too many times."

Allen scored 22 points and Glenn Robinson added 15 and nine rebounds for the Bucks, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77).
