Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Using the outside prowess of Isaiah Rider and inside presence of Arvydas Sabonis, the Portland Trail Blazers cruised to their sixth straight win over Dallas Mavericks, 106-91.

Rider scored 23 of his season-high 30 points in the first half and Sabonis collected 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who used a l2-3 spurt to close the first half and take control.

Damon Stoudamire added 18 points and six assists for the Blazers, who overcame an injury to forward-center Rasheed Wallace to win for the 10th time in 11 games. Portland's 17 victories is one shy of the Utah Jazz for the league lead.

"It's great. It's certainly something we talked about wanting to do in the short season," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said of his team's 17-4 record. "You need to come out strong and hard because you never know what's going to happen in a short season with injuries and everything."

Wallace left the game with 5:56 remaining in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle and did not return.

Michael Finley scored 21 points to pace Dallas, which failed in a bid for its first three-game winning streak of the season.

Clinging to a 44-43 lead with 3:39 left in the first half, the Blazers closed strong. Rider scored Portland's next seven points and Stoudamire tallied the final five of the half, helping the Blazers to a 56-46 advantage.

Rider made 9-of-15 shots in the first half, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. He finished 12-of-22 from the floor. As a team, the Blazers hit 9-of-16 from 3-point range.

I didn't want to come out and have the same game as my last one," said Rider, who scored just three points on 1-of-8 shooting in Saturday's win against the Los Angeles Clippers. "I don't sleep well after a bad game. I prepared right and came out right tonight."

"We played a very good team tonight," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We gave it our all. The energy was there and I was very pleased with the effort. The 3-point shot really hurt us. In the trapping defense we have, that is what we were giving up."

The Blazers still held a 60-52 lead with 7:28 left in the third quarter before Rider made consecutive baskets, fueling a 15-5 surge that pushed the margin to 75-57 with 1:38 left in the period. Sabonis scored the final five points of the spurt.

The 7-3 Sabonis had his way with the Mavericks' center duo of Hot Rod Williams and Shawn Bradley, who combined for just two points.

However, the Mavericks answered Portland's run by scoring 14 of the next 17 points, capped by Hubert Davis' jumper that made it 78-71 with 8:34 remaining.

The Blazers showed their depth as reserves Jimmy Jackson, Jermaine O'Neal and Walt Williams scored the next eight points, helping open an 86-72 cushion with 6:51 to play. The Blazers led by as many as 19 points in the final period.

The Blazers shot 46 percent (40-of-88) while Dallas shot 44 percent (37-of-84).
