Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- While the Denver Nuggets enjoyed a rare laugher, there is nothing funny about the play of the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Denver had every player in the scoring column and six in double figures, using a second-quarter barrage of 3-pointers to rout the the inept Grizzlies, 110-84.

The win snapped the Nuggets' seven-game losing streak and extended Vancouver's slide to 12 games.

Antonio McDyess scored 21 points in 33 minutes and Cory Alexander and Johnny Taylor added 14 apiece. Taylor's total was a career high.

The Nuggets are 0-12 on the road but have won six of 10 at home. They rebounded from a dismal performance on Saturday in which they scored a franchise record-low 61 points by scoring 56 in the first half tonight.

"Like I told the guys, the way we felt against San Antonio the other night, we needed to make someone else feel like that," said Nuggets guard Chauncey Billups.

"Winning helps, it makes you feel like playing," said Nuggets coach Mike D'Antoni. "It gives you confidence and makes you happy. I didn't want to get too relaxed too early, especially us."

How good were things for the Nuggets? They set season highs in field goals made (43), steals (16), turnovers forced (21) and assists (34). They also blocked 17 shots, two shy of the franchise record set November 24, 1987 against the New Jersey Nets.

"We don't have fun when we lose," said rookie Keon Clark, who set season highs with 13 points and six blocks. "We all had fun tonight. The whole bench, the starting five, we had fun tonight. I'm glad I was on the giving end and not the receiving end."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 15 points and rookie Felipe Lopez added 14 for Vancouver, which is in the midst of its longest losing streak since a 13-game slide from December 26, 1997-January 16, 1998.

Denver wasted little time in breaking the game open, scoring 19 of the first 25 points. McDyess opened the game with consecutive baskets and capped the early run with a dunk. The Nuggets were 12-of-21 in the opening period.

"It is an absolute embarrassment to not compete at the beginning of the game," said Grizzlies coach Brian Hill. "It's frustrating when it happens back to back. I'm not worried about my job, I'm worrying about getting my team ready to play."

Denver's lead was 33-22 with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half when Carl Herrera had a tip in to spark a 13-2 burst. Taylor followed with a pair of 3-pointers 31 seconds apart.

After Lopez had a tip with 8:15 left to draw Vancouver within 41-24, Alexander buried another 3-pointer for a 20-point bulge. Alexander, who finished with 11 assists, capped the run with a 17-footer with 7:36 remaining.

Through three quarters, Denver was shooting 56 percent from the field (30-of-54), 46 percent from 3-point range (6-of-13) and 80 percent from the free throw line (16-of-20).

Bryant Reeves continued to struggle for Vancouver, going 1-for-6 from the field, grabbing three rebounds and committing four fouls in 18 minutes.
