Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Charlotte Hornets fans had to like what they saw from a pair of recent acquisitions in their home debuts.

Eddie Jones scored a season-high 29 points and Elden Campbell pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds as the Hornets used their best offensive effort of the year for a 119-111 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Both Jones and Campbell, who added 14 points, were playing their first game in front of the home fans since being acquired from Los Angeles a week ago in a five-player trade that sent Glen Rice to the Lakers.

"I just wanted to come out and play hard and show everyone that I'm happy to be here," Campbell said. "It seems the perception was that I don't want to be here. That is totally untrue. I'm very happy to be here and look forward to ending my career in a Hornets uniform."

Jones also talked about being in Charlotte.

"The thing is I'm happy. When you hear your name mentioned in trade rumors, you feel they don't want you around. When you feel the city and organization is behind you, it transfers onto the court. I'm here in Charlotte now and I'm enjoying every minute of it."

Bobby Phills had 17 of his season-high 24 points in the first half for the Hornets, who never trailed and built a 63-47 halftime lead. Derrick Coleman collected 16 points and nine rebounds and David Wesley added 15 points and 11 assists for Charlotte.

Rex Chapman scored 25 points and Jason Kidd had 17 and 14 assists for Phoenix, which failed in a bid to win three straight games for the first time this season.

The Hornets took control from the outset, opening the contest by scoring 10 of the first 11 points. Phills keyed the surge with seven points.

Playing their best offensive quarter of the season, the Hornets took their biggest lead of the contest at 37-17 after Jones' layup with 2:06 left in the period. Phills had 13 points in the quarter while Jones added 10 as the Hornets took a 38-24 advantage.

"Tonight, the guys were as focused as I've seen all year," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We came out with a lot of energy and were able to knock down most of our shots in that first quarter."

Phills finished 9-of-13 from the floor as the Hornets shot 54 percent (38-of-70). Jones was 7-of-16 from the field and made an impressive 15-of-17 free throws.

Phoenix cut into the Hornets' 16-point halftime lead in the third quarter. After rookie Ricky Davis hit a 19-foot jumper to give the Hornets an 82-64 lead with 3:47 left in the third, the Suns got back in the game.

Cliff Robinson nailed a 3-pointer and Kidd converted a three-point play, triggering an 18-5 spurt which brought Phoenix within 87-82 with six seconds left in the quarter. However, the Suns got no closer the rest of the way.

"We didn't play well at all tonight," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "It was the worst we played in a long time. We played bad defense, but our offense was just as bad as our defense. I was very disappointed in our effort and intensity."

Robinson and Tom Gugliotta added 19 points apiece for Phoenix, which shot 49 percent (41-of-83) from the floor. Robinson also pulled down 11 rebounds but could not prevent the Suns from being dominated on the boards, 44-29.
