Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury made a successful home debut with 29 points, including a key three-point play with 57.1 seconds remaining, helping the New Jersey Nets snap an eight-game losing streak with an 88-87 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Marbury, a Brooklyn, New York native, drove the left side of the lane and hit a layup while he was fouled by Gary Trent. His free throw gave the Nets an 86-85 advantage. Trent answered with a spinning jumper to put Dallas in front, 87-86, with 38 seconds to play.

But Kerry Kittles was fouled after grabbing a rebound of Jayson Williams' miss and made both free throws to give New Jersey an 88-87 lead with 17.7 seconds remaining.

"It's a good win for us," Williams said. "Stephon bought everybody pizza, guys were high-fiving and slapping each other on their backs. It's been a rough week for eveybody. It's tough with the new coach and new players. Today we came out and had more fun."

After Kendall Gill fouled Michael Finley with 5.8 seconds left, the Mavericks set a final play. A.C. Green sent the inbounds pass to Finley, who drove the left elbow but missed a 20-footer that bounced off the inside of the rim as time expired.

Acquired in a three-team trade on Thursday, Marbury made 8-of-16 shots from the field and 11-of-13 free throws as the Nets ended their longest losing streak since an 11-game slide during the 1990-91 campaign.

"I was born to lead, and me being a leader helps Kerry and Keith (Van Horn) because they could just go out and play their games," Marbury said. "Tonight, I saw us talking and I saw people cutting. I knew what was going on because people were talking to each other. Our strategy was very good. We just need to knock down our shots. Guys will start getting the open shots and eventually they will go down. Tonight, we did what we had to do."

The win was Don Casey's first since replacing the fired John Calipari. New Jersey was beaten at Toronto on Tuesday, 100-85, in Casey's first game.

"I don't know who needed this more, the players or the coaches," Casey said. "But they were really warriors down the end. It was a tough game and they really came through."

Van Horn had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Gill added 15 and six for the Nets, who have won the last three meetings with Dallas.

Trent collected 21 points and 16 rebounds and Finley also scored 21 points for the Mavericks, who have dropped six of their last eight games. Dallas shot just 37 percent (33-for-89) from the floor and 60 percent (15-for-25) from the free throw line.

"It was a hard loss," said Mavericks coach Don Nelson. "All I can tell you is we played good and bad. We didn't make our free throws. Maybe in the long scheme of things when you don't make your free throws and putbacks you don't deserve to win."

Hubert Davis scored 12 points off the bench, making three straight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. The third gave Dallas a 79-75 lead with 5:04 left. Davis' other basket was a 3-pointer that capped a 15-5 run and extended the Mavericks' lead to 35-23 with 5:32 remaining.

Van Horn had six points in a 15-2 run that forged a 37-37 tie with 1:42 left in the second.

"It's hard. We kept hanging around but we couldn't make the big play down the end," Davis said. "It went back and forth but Marbury made the plays down the stretch and they won the game. We had them down the first half and we should have put them away, but we didn't and we're to blame."

New Jersey took a 41-39 lead into halftime after Van Horn made two free throws with 36 seconds left and Marbury added one just before the break.

The Nets built the lead to 50-40 on Marbury's 3-pointer with 9:27 remaining in the third quarter. Finley had consecutive dunks to cap a 7-0 burst and pull Dallas within 58-56 with 2:53 to go in the third.

The Nets took a 67-60 lead into the fourth after Marbury made a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from the right sideline in the final 34.2 seconds of the period.
