Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Utilizing the inside-outside game to perfection, Juwan Howard and Mitch Richmond combined for 57 points as the Washington Wizards pasted the Cleveland Cavaliers, 113-83.

Howard, a power forward, had 28 points and 15 rebounds, making 12-of-17 shots. Richmond scored 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range as the star guard bombed away from outside.

"I think it was our best game so far," Richmond said. "We came out the right way and did all the positives tonight. We moved the ball very well and our defense was outstanding."

"This game was very much necessary for us," Howard said. "It was our best home game to date. It's nice to have a game like this, especially when you are so consistent. ... Now this needs to continue for us."

The offense clicked on all cylinders as Washington registered its highest total of the season and biggest margin of victory. Rod Strickland had a season-high 16 assists and the Wizards committed a season-low eight turnovers.

Through three quarters, Howard and Richmond scored 24 points apiece, shooting a combined 18-of-26 from the field.

"Richmond and Howard were shooting on us all night long. They were unstoppable," said Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello. "The Wizards executed and played flawless, they made us look bad. They controlled it completely."

"We got all open shots tonight," Strickland added. "Everything just clicked. We used all 48 minutes. If we play like that, I think we will do fine."

Johnny Newman scored 18 points and Shawn Kemp added 15 for Cleveland, which never led and had its three-game winning streak snapped.

The Cavaliers, coming off an impressive 100-93 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, fell to 3-7 on the road.

Cleveland was within 15-14 with four minutes left in the first quarter when Richmond and Howard combined to score seven straight points. Howard hit a free throw with 3:50 to go and Richmond converted a layup. After a thunderous dunk by Howard, Richmond capped the burst with a runner in the lane with 2:36 left.

The Cavaliers battled back within 27-22 with 9:18 remaining in the second quarter but Washington pushed its advantage to double digits with a 13-7 run. Six players scored for the Wizards in the spurt, which was capped by Richmond's basket with 5:03 to go in the half.

Cleveland mounted its last comeback early in the second half, drawing within 51-44. But Otis Thorpe scored seven straight points to ignite a 19-5 run that put away the game.

Thorpe made 7-of-12 shots and scored 17 points for Washington, which shot 52 percent (44-of-85) and improved to 4-7 at the MCI Center. The Wizards were 7-of-14 from 3-point range.
