Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Wesley Person scored a season-high 22 points and Shawn Kemp made a pair key defensive plays down the stretch as the Cleveland Cavaliers held on for an 88-85 victory over the New Jersey Nets, whose miserable season continued.

The Cavaliers held an 86-78 lead with 4:07 remaining when Person converted a layup. But the Nets scored the next seven points, capped by Stephon Marbury's 3-pointer, to close to 86-85 with 1:44 left.

New Jersey had a pair of chances to take the lead, but Kemp came up big both times. He blocked Kerry Kittles' lay-in attempt with 67 seconds left and stripped the ball away from Keith Van Horn with 18 seconds remaining.

"Originally, we were going to run the high pick-and-roll with Marbury," Van Horn said. "They trapped him. He had to get the ball to Jayson Williams and Jayson got it to me. Kemp cut me off driving and I spun and he anticipated my move very well. He's got quick hands and he has been around the league a long time so you have to give him credit."

"The play was a broken play because the Cavs defensed it well," said New Jersey coach Don Casey. "They wouldn't let Stephon get the ball. It was a pick-and-roll we were doing up high that we had so much success with. It was broken down and Keith spun and they came down and dug him out."

Following Kemp's steal, Brevin Knight sank a pair of foul shots to make it 88-85 with nine seconds left. After a timeout, Marbury's 3-point attempt over Knight as the clock wound down bounced off the rim twice before falling to the floor.

"If he makes that, we are going into overtime," Knight said. "When the ball bounced straight up off the rim, I was really worried. He had two big (3-pointers) in the fourth quarter that I shouldn't have given him. I should've played him tighter."

Marbury scored 20 points and Chris Carr added 18 off the bench for the Nets, who lost for the eighth time in nine games while falling to 1-14 away from home. Only the Denver Nuggets, at 0-12, have a worse road record than New Jersey.

Kemp collected 12 points and 13 rebounds as Cleveland won for the fourth time in its last five games and rebounded from an embarrassing 30-point loss at Washington.

"I was real proud the way the team bounced back after last night," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "We played defensively with some purpose."

Cleveland took a 77-69 with 9:01 to play after Bob Sura made 1-of-2 foul shots. But the Nets got a sudden burst of energy.

Jayson Williams hit 1-of-2 free throws, Carr made a driving layup and Marbury drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Nets within 77-75 with 7:51 to play. Marbury finished 8-of-16 from the floor and also handed out nine assists.

The Cavaliers took the lead for good at 12-10 on Cedric Henderson's layup with 6:35 left in the first quarter. Danny Ferry scored all 11 of his points in the first half and Henderson had 12, helping Cleveland open a 49-40 advantage at intermssion.

Only a great effort from Carr in the first half kept the Nets within striking distance. He came into the game averaging just 1.9 points per game, scored 16 points in the opening half. He finished 7-of-12 from the field.

Person connected on 10-of-20 shots as the Cavs finished at 46 percent (36-of-78) compared to 42 percent (36-of-86) for New Jersey.

Andrew DeClercq added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavs, who held a 41-38 rebounding edge. Williams had 13 boards for New Jersey.

Cleveland played without shooting guard Derek Anderson, who missed the game with a strained right knee.
