Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell made his debut in a Milwaukee Bucks uniform and took just one game to re-injure his ankle.

Playing his first contest since being acquired from the New Jersey Nets in a huge three-way trade on March 11, Cassell turned his right ankle with 3:01 left in Milwaukee's 94-87 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

No one was near Cassell on the play as he headed upcourt after Charlotte's Chucky Brown made a layup. He was screaming and writhing in pain as the fans in the Bradley Center watched in stunned silence.

In the season opener, Cassell scored 36 points before badly spraining the ankle late in the game. He played sparingly in just three more games before being traded to Milwaukee. The offensive-minded point guard scored 13 points tonight.

Cassell will be X-rayed Monday and his status for the Bucks' contest against Detroit is uncertain. It will be Milwaukee's third game in as many nights.

"It's pretty severe with Sam," Bucks coach George Karl said. "He's a good basketball player and clever with the ball. We've got to regroup."

Eddie Jones led Charlotte with 23 points, including seven in a 10-0 run that opened the fourth quarter and gave the Hornets an 80-70 advantage with 8:48 to play. David Wesley finished with 16 points and Derrick Coleman added 12.

"We felt good about ourselves because we kept with our game plan and attacked them hard," Jones said. "We are playing together and we moved the ball well and made our open shots."

Glenn Robinson hit two free throws, pulling Milwaukee within 91-87 with 36 seconds left. Bobby Phills answered with a jumper 17 seconds later to end any hope for the Bucks.

Robinson scored 19 points for the Bucks, who fell for the fifth time in seven games since the trade. Ray Allen netted 16 and Ervin Johnson came off the bench to contribute 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Charlotte went on a 7-0 run midway through the second quarter, opening a 34-28 lead with 7:38 left. Eldridge Recasner scored four points in the burst.

The Hornets scored the last five points of the first half to gain a 49-38 lead at intermission. Wesley led Charlotte with 11 points.

"It was a very satisfying win because we had a nice lead and knew they'd come back," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We just kept plugging away on defense and a lot of people contributed tonight."

Cassell scored four points during a 9-0 spurt to pull the Bucks within 57-56 with 5:50 to play in the third quarter. The Hornets closed the period with a 7-2 run, punctuated by Brown's 27-foot banker at the buzzer for a 70-70 tie.
