Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- A 15-point burst by the Indiana Pacers was just enough to overcome a 14-point run by Mitch Richmond.

The Pacers scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to open a 10-point lead, then survived a scoring spree by Richmond for a 90-86 victory over the Washington Wizards, their seventh straight in the series.

Richmond scored 14 of his season-high 35 points in the final period but was unable to make a pair of tough shots down the stretch. He missed a reverse layup with 50 seconds left and shot an airball on a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with five seconds to go.

Reggie Miller scored 18 points to lead the Pacers, who improved to 11-2 at home. Miller appeared to get away with hitting the elbow of Richmond as he shot the 3-pointer.

Washington has lost five of its last seven games and dropped to 0-3 against Indiana this season.

Indiana was outplayed for the first three quarters and trailed 63-58 entering the final period. The Wizards missed their first six shots and the Pacers roared to a 73-63 lead with 7:55 to go. Miller scored five points and Sam Perkins added four in the run.

"In the huddle before the start of the fourth quarter we talked about stepping it up on defense and getting the crowd involved," said Pacers swingman Jalen Rose, who scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. "We caused them to miss some early shots and that helped us get into our offense."

"We were going OK but the wings fell off," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "There was a stretch where we got impatient at the beginning of the fourth."

Richmond got hot and rallied Washington. Working against Miller and Rose, he scored 14 straight Wizards points over a five-minute span, including a three-point play that made it 84-79 with 2:28 to go.

"He was really working out there tonight and you could see that he really wanted to win," Pacers coach Larry Bird said.

The Wizards failed to cash in on a flagrant foul by Indiana's Travis Best. Calbert Cheaney missed two free throws and Ben Wallace made 1-of-2 on the ensuing possession. Wallace grabbed 14 rebounds but made just 2-of-9 free throws.

"The turning point was the missed four-point play chance we had on the flagrant foul," Bickerstaff said.

"One out of four on the four-point play hurt us, but we can't say missing free throws lost the game," Wallace said.

Two free throws by Otis Thorpe pulled Washington within 86-84 with 1:10 to go. But Indiana's Dale Davis split a pair seven seconds later and Richmond missed his reverse layup on the next possession.

Rose made a free throw with 43 seconds left and Juwan Howard had a tip-in to make it 88-86 with 34 seconds to go. Miller missed a jumper and Richmond tried a transition 3-pointer that was well short. Rose made two free throws to seal it.

"I saw two guys collapsing on me, Reggie and Sam," Richmond said. "Maybe I should have taken it all the way. I looked up and still had six seconds left. I felt like I had a good look."

"We had some good looks, but I don't think Mitch would miss a shot like that without help," Bickerstaff said.

Rik Smits scored 14 points and Chris Mullin added 12 for the Pacers, who shot just 39 percent (32-of-82) from the field and were outrebounded, 48-40. Indiana made 23-of-39 free throws and committed a season-low eight turnovers.

"We got away with another ugly win tonight, that's for sure," Smits said. "We keep talking about playing better but it's obvious we haven't made the changes or figured it out."

Rod Strickland and Otis Thorpe scored 14 points apiece and Howard added 13 and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 46 percent (35-of-76) but made just 15-of-25 from the line and committed 18 turnovers, leading to 24 points.

Richmond scored 16 points in the first half as the Wizards opened a 42-38 lead. Strickland added six more in the third quarter.
