Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon scored a season-high 32 points as the Houston Rockets remained hot and continued their reign over the Sacramento Kings with a 110-100 victory.

The Rockets (17-9) have won four straight and seven of their last eight games, shaking off the inconsistency they displayed during a 10-8 start. Houston has won 10 straight meetings from Sacramento dating to April 5, 1996.

Olajuwon scored five points during a 15-4 run to start the third quarter as the Rockets appeared to take control of the game, opening a 76-54 lead with 6:50 left.

"We played well but we let them get back into the game," said Olajuwon. "We have to work on our killer instinct. We have to continue to have a positive attitude."

"Hakeem is the best post man in the game behind Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal)," added Sacramento forward Chris Webber. "I think Houston, Portland, Utah and Los Angeles are definitely the top teams in the West."

Hoping to avoid a season-high four-game losing streak, the Kings rallied with an 11-0 fourth-quarter run. Webber, who scored 29 points, sank two free throws to cap the spurt that pulled Sacramento within 99-95 with to play.

Olajuwon, who collected 19 points in a 92-82 win over the Kings on February 10, answered with a short hook shot on the Rockets' ensuing possession.

Charles Barkley grabbed 16 rebounds to go with 19 points, including five of Houston's last seven.

"We are still learning together," said Barkley. "People talk about the NBA being blowouts every night. But that isn't going to happen. We are not going to win every game by 20 points. I wish we could beat every team by 20 points, but it isn't going to happen."

Scottie Pippen scored 25 points and rookie Michael Dickerson added 23 for the Rockets, who were almost burned by one of their former players.

Vernon Maxwell, who was a member of the Rockets' back-to-back NBA championship teams in 1994-95, scored a season-high 25 points in 28 minutes off the bench to fuel Sacramento's comeback attempt.

"This is not home for me," said Maxwell. "We came out and still lost the game. I don't care what happens. I just play my game. I'm the same old Vernon."

"Vernon Maxwell shot them back into the game in the second half," added Barkley.

Olajuwon sank a 14-foot jumper to give Houston a comfortable 99-84 cushion with 5:26 remaining. Maxwell responded by drilling a 3-pointer from the right wing, and was knocked to the floor by Brent Price. Maxwell hit the free throw to complete the four-point play, cutting the deficit to 11 points with 4:46 left.

Michael Hawkins followed with a 3-pointer before Maxwell made two free throws, narrowing the gap to 99-93 with 4:09 remaining.

"Unfortunately, it's been kind of a long running hit for us," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "We get behind early and make a strong comeback but fall short in the end. We have got to find a way to play like we did the last 18 minutes and play that way the whole game."

Maxwell made 6-of-12 shots, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range for Sacramento, which converted 7-of-14 from beyond the arc.

Olajuwon was 14-of-20 from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Rockets, who held a startling 54-35 advantage on the boards.

Pippen, Barkley, Olajuwon and Dickerson accounted for all but 11 of Houston's points. Othella Harrington collected 11 rebounds and five points for the Rockets, who shot 51 percent (42-of-83).

Corliss Williamson scored 10 points for the Kings, who shot 43 percent (38-of-89) and forced 24 turnovers.

"Turnovers. We had turnovers and there wasn't that much defensive pressure," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We just didn't have the mental toughness."
