Game StoryPHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd scored 24 points and keyed a fourth-quarter surge as the Phoenix Suns snapped a season-high three-game losing streak with an 89-84 victory over the slumping Vancouver Grizzlies.
For 3 1/2 quarters, the Suns were outplayed before realizing they were facing the Grizzlies, who have the worst record in the NBA over the last three seasons.
The Suns trailed 69-65 with 5:20 remaining after a lay-in by rookie J.R. Henderson. Kidd made a layup and converted a three-point play, triggering a 10-0 run that gave Phoenix a 75-69 advantage with 3:05 to play. Kidd scored 12 points in period.
Tom Gugliotta added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Suns, who got back to the .500 mark and beat Vancouver for the sixth straight time. The Suns are 12-2 all-time against the Grizzlies, including a 6-1 record at home.
"It was probably the worst of our performances in the last four games but three of those four, we did not win," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "All I can say is that we did not play very well, but we won."
Shareef Abdur-Rahim collected 26 points for Vancouver, which has dropped 10 straight on the road after splitting its first two games away from home.
"They hit some big shots down the stretch," Abdur-Rahim said. "We've been playing with some adversity. We've been without point guard Lee Mayberry and without "Big Country" (Bryant Reeves). We are just taking the attitudue that we're going out and leaving whatever we have on the floor."
The Grizzlies have lost 15 of their last 16 overall and are looking more and more like the team that lost at least 60 games in each of their first three seasons.
After Gugliotta made a layup to put Phoenix ahead 75-69, Abdur-Rahim scored the Grizzlies' next six points as they closed to 76-75 with 1:51 to play.
But Cliff Robinson nailed a 3-pointer and Kidd made a pair of free throws before Gugliotta sank 1-of-2 foul shots to push the lead to seven with 33 seconds remaining. The closest the Grizzlies got the rest of the way was three points with nine seconds left.
Gugliotta made 8-of-13 shots from the floor as the Suns shot 43 percent (32-of-75). Vancouver also finished at 43 percent (31-of-73) from the field.
Kidd made 6-of-10 shots from the floor but struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 11-of-22 foul shots. He also handed out nine assists as he got the best of Vancouver rookie point guard Mike Bibby in his return to Arizona.
"After each timeout, we came out flatter and flatter," Kidd said. "Once we knew we were in for a ballgame, we turned it up and got away with one. This is an ugly win, but we've had some pretty losses. No one wants to say that, so if we kept on winning ugly, I'll take it."
Bibby, who played collegiately at Arizona, scored 11 points -- none in the fourth quarter -- and also had four assists.
In a lackluster first half, Gugliotta scored seven points and rookie Gerald Brown scored his only six, helping the Suns to a 37-33 lead. The 37 points matched a season low in a half for Phoenix.
Rookie Felipe Lopez added 14 points for Vancouver, which was without Reeves for the first time this season. The Grizzlies' starting center missed the game with a sore right knee.
