Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Sixth man Darrell Armstrong again was the man for the Orlando Magic.

Armstrong stayed hot with 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Magic to their sixth victory in seven games, 96-86 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Coming off a career-high 28 points against Charlotte on Tuesday, Armstrong made 10-of-15 shots, compensating for a poor shooting game by starting guards Penny Hardaway and Nick Anderson. He is averaging 20.8 points in his last six games and scored 10 in the fourth quarter, turning back a rally by Cleveland.

"I'm trying to help Penny, Nick and this team out," Armstrong said. "They get double-teamed a lot, so I'm trying to be the guy that makes teams pay when they double-team. That way, maybe they'll have to start playing them straight up."

"Darrell came in and gave us a big lift off the bench as he has all year," Magic coach Chuck Daly said.

Horace Grant had 16 points and 13 rebounds and battled Cavaliers star forward Shawn Kemp to a standstill as the Magic improved to 14-2 at home, the best record in the Eastern Conference.

"You have to give credit to Ike (Isaac Austin) and (Michael) Doleac, who really wore him down a lot," Grant said. "He is a big load down there. The whole team collectively did a great job on him."

"He's such a monster on the box that you try to control him," Daly said.

Kemp had 22 points and a season-high 16 rebounds but made just 6-of-21 shots. Brevin Knight added 15 points and 12 assists for the Cavaliers, who had won five of their last six games.

"It's nothing new," Kemp said of the multiple defenders who sent him to the line 13 times. "It just comes with the territory, I guess. I can't complain about that, really."

Orlando (20-8) moved into a virtual tie with Miami (19-7) atop the Atlantic Division. The Magic have beaten every East foe except the Heat and will get their chance Sunday. They visit Charlotte on Friday.

A 3-pointer by Armstrong gave the Magic the lead for good at 64-62 with 3:44 left in the third quarter and triggered an 11-2 run. Grant scored six points in the burst, including a layup that capped it at 72-64 with 37 seconds to go.

Kemp closed the quarter with two free throws, but Magic rookie Michael Doleac scored the first four points of the fourth period, extending the lead to 10 points. Armstrong's driving layup gave Orlando its largest lead at 81-69 with 7:29 left.

"He is a tempo changer," Cavs forward Cedric Henderson said. "When he gets in, it is a much quicker team. He makes everybody else run."

"He's got my vote right now (for the Sixth Man Award)," Cavs coach Mike Fratello said. "We had a hard time finding him out there a lot of times tonight."

Cleveland's late rally was spurned by Armstrong. A jumper by Wesley Person cut the deficit to 86-80, but Armstrong scored on a layup with 2:27 to go. After a 15-footer by Danny Ferry, Armstrong hit a jumper for a 90-82 advantage with 1:15 remaining.

"He's a very competitive guy," Daly said. "He doesn't like to lose. He just plays on instinct, sometimes on fumes. He plays very, very hard. he attacks the defense, which is crucial for us, and he's making shots."

Hardaway scored 14 points on just 2-of-9 shooting. Anderson added 13 on three 3-pointers but made just 5-of-18 shots.

Rookie Matt Harpring had 12 points and seven rebounds and Doleac added nine points for Orlando, which shot 46 percent (38-of-83) from the field and held a 47-40 rebounding edge. Hardaway also had seven assists.

Person, Ferry and Andrew DeClercq scored 10 points each for the Cavs, who shot 42 percent (33-of-78) and committed 18 turnovers.

"When it came down to it, we did not do a good job of taking care of the basketball, some key turnovers in cirtical times," Fratello said. "We got beat up pretty badly on the offensive boards."
