Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Steve Smith scored 21 points and Grant Long keyed a fourth-quarter surge as the streaking Atlanta Hawks pulled away for a 93-81 victory over the slumping Chicago Bulls.

The Hawks trailed 70-69 with 9:53 remaining before Dikembe Mutombo sank a pair of free throws 47 seconds later, fueling a 14-4 burst that put Atlanta up by 10 with just under four minutes remaining. Long was big in the run, scoring six of his seven points in that span.

Mutombo had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Mookie Blaylock collected 17 points and eight assists for the Hawks, who have won three straight games to move a season-high six games over .500. Atlanta has also won three of four meetings from the Bulls this season.

Rookie Kornel David came off the bench to score a season-high 14 points for Chicago, which has dropped six of its last eight games.

The Bulls played without leading scorer Toni Kukoc for the second straight game due to a lower back strain. Chicago was also without shooting guard Ron Harper, who was placed on the injured list before the game with a hyperextended knee.

Smith converted a layup to put the Hawks up 83-73 with 3:50 to play, but rookie Charles Jones answered with a 3-pointer to trigger a 6-2 surge that pulled the Bulls within 85-79 with 2:05 remaining.

The Bulls had a chance to draw closer but Brent Barry missed a pair of foul shots with 1:34 left. Smith provided the dagger when he drilled a 3-pointer from the right sideline that put the Hawks ahead by nine with 77 seconds to go.

Smith finished 6-of-14 from the field as the Hawks shot 46 percent (33-of-72) from the floor.

Despite playing shorthanded, the Bulls led by six points after one quarter and took their biggest lead of the contest at 37-20 with 6:55 left in the second quarter after rookie Cory Carr hit a jumper, capping a 12-1 run.

Mutombo talked about having faith after the Hawks got down by 17.

"I believed it and I remember saying something to my teammates that we better not be panicky because we still have a lot of time on the clock ... we're going to have to fight our way out," he said. "We went in and picked up the defense in the second quarter and got back in the game."

Atlanta apparently listened to Mutombo's words, closing the period on a 24-11 run to draw within 48-44 at intermission.

"They got us into playing their game," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They were pressing and trapping and we got in a frenzy instead of just reading the situation. At halftime, we talked about it and then we handled it without a problem."

The Hawks carried the momentum from their strong finish to the second quarter by opening the second half by scoring 16 of the first 20 points to take a 60-52 lead with 7:41 left in the quarter. Alan Henderson tallied seven of his 13 points in that burst.

In addition to already missing Kukoc and Harper, the Bulls also lost guard Randy Brown who suffered an ankle injury midway through the second quarter. He started the third quarter but left after just two minutes.

But like the Hawks closed the second quarter, Chicago was strong over the final 7 1/2 minutes of the third, finishing with a 16-6 burst to take a 68-66 lead into the final quarter.

Barry contributed 11 points and Brown had 10 for the Bulls, who shot 48 percent (31-of-64) and committed 22 turnovers that led to 28 points for Atlanta.

"We're really proud of our guys' efforts tonight," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We played through some adversity. Coming off a couple of tough losses I really thought they came out spirited."
