Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets watched a 22-point lead slip away but closed by scoring 12 of the final 16 points and defeated the Orlando Magic, 90-82, for their seventh straight home win.

After a 36-point first quarter, Charlotte appeared ready to coast to victory. They led by 22 early in the second quarter before Orlando began chipping away. The Magic came all the way back, tying it at 78-78 with 3:54 remaining.

But Elden Campbell, who had his best game as a Hornet with 24 points, made two free throws and a layup around a free throw by teammate Derrick Coleman and Charlotte was never headed.

Coleman finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Hornets, who have won five of their last six overall. Charlotte also improved to 7-4 under interim head coach Paul Silas.

"It was a big win for us from all aspects," Silas said. "I was proud of the guys. They made a run but we hung tough and made the plays to win."

"We're getting a good effort from everybody right now. That's why we've been successful lately. You have to expect that good teams like Orlando are going to make runs. We challenged ourselves and responded."

Nick Anderson had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Orlando, which had won the previous two meetings between the teams this season. The loss was only the second in eight games for the Magic.

"They shot the ball extremely well but we never quit," Anderson said. "We haven't quit all year and we're going to keep fighting until the end."

The Hornets led 74-60 to open the fourth quarter but Orlando scored 16 of the first 18 points in the period. Anderson, Derek Strong and Penny Hardaway had four points apiece during the spurt.

Anderson forged the final tie, 78-78, with a six-footer with 3:54 to go before Campbell sank two from the line 20 seconds later. Anderson missed a 3-pointer and Coleman made a free throw.

After Darrell Armstrong missed a driving layup, Campbell converted a layup of his own for an 83-78 lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Danny Schayes hit a short hook shot for Orlando but Eldridge Recasner buried a long 3-pointer to push the lead to 86-80 with 87 seconds left.

After Orlando missed a pair of shots, Strong got an offensive rebound and was fouled. He made two from the free throw line to get the Magic within 86-82 but Campbell hit a layup with 32 seconds to go and Recasner added two free throws nine seconds later.

Orlando shot 37 percent (30-of-82) from the field, made 1-of-10 three-point 3-point attempts and committed 17 turnovers. One reason why the Magic were able to stay in the contest was a 50-32 rebounding edge and 21-of-24 performance from the free throw line.

Charlotte committed just nine turnovers and blocked 10 shots, including five by Campbell.
