Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Rik Smits scored 20 points and Reggie Miller added 16 to lead a balanced attack as the Indiana Pacers cruised to a 100-91 victory over the floundering New Jersey Nets.

Antoine Davis came off the bench and contributed 13 points and eight rebounds and Mark Jackson had 11 points, eight assists and five boards for Indiana, which had six players in double figures and won for the fourth time in five games. The Pacers shot 46.5 percent (40-for-86) from the floor and 82 percent (18-for-22) from the free throw line.

Stephon Marbury had 24 points and eight assists and Keith Van Horn added 22 points and five rebounds for New Jersey, which shot only 36 percent (35-for-98) and fell to 2-5 under interim coach Don Casey.

"It looks like we did take enough shots. We had 98 shots," Casey said. "We lost to another very good team. They executed well. We need teams not to be at their best. They did a lot of good things, so did we, but in spurts. But we're competing, that's the only positive."

Jalen Rose and Travis Best each scored 10 points for the Pacers, who have defeated the Nets three times this season and five straight overall.

"Our defense in the second half was pretty good," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "Mark Jackson and Travis Best played extremely well and we moved the ball. We got a lot of fast breaks, we didn't convert many of them but we got fast breaks."

There were nine ties before the Pacers took the lead for good, 42-41, when Smits made a pair of free throws with 3:10 left in the second quarter. Smits made two more foul shots with 1:45 remaining and Miller drove for a layup to push the lead to 46-41.

"When we play New Jersey they come out fired up and play well," Miller said. "We had two tough games at our place and were expecting the same and we got the same tonight. Their record doesn't indicate the talent on this team. On any given night any one of these guys can get hot and hurt you."

The Nets closed to 48-47 on a 3-pointer by Van Horn with 13.9 second left, but Best answered with a running jumper and the Pacers took a three-point lead into halftime.

In the third, Indiana opened a 68-58 lead after Jackson converted a three-point play to cap a 10-2 burst with 3:46 remaining. The Nets made just 8-of-27 (30 percent) shots in the third and trailed 74-68 going into the final period.

Marbury made a 15-footer 33 seconds into the fourth, but the Nets came no closer as Rose answered with a layup off a fast break. Indiana's biggest lead of the game was 88-76 on a hook shot by Sam Perkins with 6:29 to play.
