Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- It took a half, but the Utah Jazz woke up in time to remain perfect against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Karl Malone scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half as the Jazz overcame a sluggish first half to defeat Vancouver for the 15th straight time, 85-80.

The Grizzlies held a surprising 42-35 halftime lead before Malone scored nine points in a 14-1 burst to open the third quarter and put Utah ahead for good.

Shandon Anderson added 12 points for the Jazz, who improved to 7-0 all-time in Vancouver while avoiding their first three-game road losing streak since December 1997. John Stockton contributed 10 points and six assists for Utah.

Utah improved its record to 21-6, one game behind the Portland Trail Blazers for the league's best mark.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 30 points for Vancouver, which has lost 17 of its last 18 games. He did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting.

At 5-23, the Grizzlies own the NBA's second-worst record, better only than the Los Angeles Clippers (2-23).

Rookie Felipe Lopez converted a layup with 1:41 remaining to pull the Grizzlies within 81-78. But Jeff Hornacek made a pair of key plays down the stretch for Utah.

Hornacek found a wide-open Greg Ostertag underneath the basket -- his 5,000th career assist -- with 41 seconds left to give the Jazz an 83-78 lead. After Tony Masenburg's tip-in cut the lead to three 14 seconds later, the 6-4 Hornacek came up big again.

With a chance to ice the game at the line, Malone missed a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left. Abdur-Rahim grabbed the rebound but Hornacek stole the ball and sank the subsequent foul shots with nine seconds left to seal the win.

"I wanted to just take a chance," Hornacek said. "I felt it wasn't that big of a chance because if Karl makes it, they're calling timeout anyway. If he misses it, they will maybe want to run with it and we had a foul to give so there wasn't anything to lose."

Fueled by Malone's nine points, the Jazz took a 49-43 lead with 9:03 remaining in the third quarter after Bryon Russell's layup. They took their biggest lead of the contest at 60-50 with 2 1/2 minutes left in the quarter following Malone's three-point play.

"We were playing decent but that third quarter we really got after them on the defensive end," Malone said. "We made shots tougher for them and in turn got an open floor for ourselves and made some easy baskets. We got them on their heels and got a lead."

Malone made 10-of-20 shots from the floor and also grabbed eight rebounds. The 6-9 former Most Valuable Player has led the Jazz in scoring in 11 of their last 12 games.

After the Jazz took their biggest lead, the Grizzlies scored the final seven points of the period, capped by Abdur-Rahim's 3-pointer to close to 60-57 heading into the final quarter.

Abdur-Rahim made 13-of-21 shots and also collected nine rebounds and handed out five assists.

"We had our opportunities," Abdur-Rahim said. "We were down only three and missed a big 3-pointer and we had situation where Hornacek made the play on me. We had our chances, we just didn't seize them."

The lowly Grizzlies actually held a 38-27 lead with 4:13 left in the second quarter after Mike Bibby sank a free throw. Bibby finished with 16 points and four assists.

Vancouver shot 49 percent (34-of-70), compared to 42 percent (32-of-76) for the Jazz. However, the Grizzlies had 17 turnovers that Utah turned into 21 points.
