Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Karl Malone and John Stockton were held to single digits in scoring for the first time in 12 years. The fact that the Los Angeles Clippers were the ones to do it makes the statistic even more amazing.

Despite having the worst record in the NBA, the Clippers made their third victory of the season a memorable one as rookie Tyrone Nesby scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half of a 103-77 pounding of Utah.

Nesby's big first half helped the Clippers (3-24) race to a 52-32 lead over the two-time defending Western Conference champion Jazz. Los Angeles was never threatened in the second half and coasted to its biggest win since a 152-120 victory over Toronto on March 13, 1998.

Eric Piatkowski tallied 23 points to lead the Clippers, whose three wins this season have all been by double-digits.

"The nice thing is everyone played well, and for us to win, we all have to play well," Piatkowski said. "Our defensive intensity, our crashing the boards and our getting blocks all proved tonight that we can play with anyone in this league."

Malone finished with seven points on 1-of-7 shooting before being ejected after picking up his second technical foul with 9:44 left in the third quarter and Stockton scored just three points in 15 minutes.

It was the first time since November 21, 1987 that both Malone and Stockton were held in single digits in scoring in the same game.

Jacque Vaughn, Todd Fuller and Jeff Hornacek scored 10 points apiece to lead the Jazz, who came into the contest with the second-best record in the league at 21-6, but left with their third loss in their last four road games.

Utah suffered its worst loss since a 111-85 defeat at Charlotte on March 18, 1998.

Holding an 18-11 lead with 5:17 left in the first quarter, the Clippers closed the period by scoring 12 of the final 14 points to open a surprising 19-point advantage. Rookie Michael Olowokandi had nine of his 15 points in the period and Nesby added seven.

Olowokandi also finished with 13 rebounds as the Clippers garnered a 44-36 rebounding edge.

"I was taught in college that if you just keep hustling, you might get everything," Olowokandi said. "We're certainly not confident, but our confidence is growing."

The Jazz cut into the lead in the second quarter and pulled within 40-29 with just over five minutes left in the half after Stockton drilled a 22-foot jumper.

But Nesby converted a three-point play and Lamond Murray hit a jumper, triggering a 12-3 run to close the half and give the Clippers a 20-point cushion.

Los Angeles, ranked last in the league in defense, held the Jazz to 32 percent shooting (11-of-34) in the first half and also forced 12 turnovers that it turned into 19 points. For the game, the Jazz shot 39 percent (28-of-71) and committed 21 turnovers that led to 27 points for Los Angeles.

"We've lost three of four, and we're not playing well, obviously," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "The kind of shots we're taking, those are the things I'm concerned about. Outside shots, quick outside shots. We've got to grind-it-out, especially on the road."

The Jazz were still trailing 57-36 with 9:44 to play in the third when Malone picked up his second technical of the game and was ejected by referee Bennie Adams. Malone received the technical for a hard foul on Maurice Taylor.

Darrick Martin's driving layup with 2:44 left in the third, gave the Clippers their largest lead at 71-45. The closest Utah got the rest of the way was 23 points.

The Clippers shot 46 percent (36-of-78) and also made 27-of-30 from the free throw line.
