Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Less than 48 hours after pulling off the most stunning upset of the season, the Los Angeles Clippers quickly came crashing back to Earth.

Chauncey Billups posted season highs with 24 points and nine assists as the Denver Nuggets rolled to a 100-88 victory over the Clippers, who still own the league's worst record.

The Clippers were blown out by the NBA's fourth-worst team only two days after destroying the two-time defending Western Conference champion Utah Jazz, owners of the league's second-best record.

Los Angeles was limited to 37 percent (26-of-70) from the field and made only 69 percent (31-of-45) at the foul line in falling to the Nuggets, who halted a four-game losing streak. The Clippers connected on 46 percent from the floor and missed only three of 30 foul shots in the 103-77 rout of the Jazz.

"We had such a good game against Utah. To come out and have a letdown like tonight is really disappointing," said Clippers swingman Eric Piatkowski. "We played good for a couple minutes and then we did some dumb things. We hoped we were over the hump, but there are some things we have to work on."

Billups scored 11 points in the third quarter, when the Nuggets put the game out of reach. The former University of Colorado standout sparked a key 12-3 burst midway through the period with a driving layup and finding Antonio McDyess for a dunk.

Billups added another layup in the run and capped it by feeding McDyess for a 15-footer that opened a 71-56 cushion with 3:16 left in the period. Los Angeles trailed, 78-61, by the end of the quarter and got no closer than the final margin.

"This win feels so good," Billups said. "The Clippers are professionals. They're not like a college team. I know they're not having a great year, but a win is a win."

McDyess collected 24 points and 15 rebounds and Nick Van Exel scored 22 points for Denver, which won for only the third time in 18 games and improved to 8-22 on the season.

Rodney Rogers scored 17 points off the bench to pace the Clippers, whose league-worst record dropped to 3-25.

"It feels good to get a win and it doesn't matter if it's against the Clippers or against the Lakers," McDyess said.

"We were not as aggressive as we were against Utah," said Los Angeles coach Chris Ford. "They took advantage of it and got better post position."

Los Angeles never led and lost by a double-digit margin for the 17th time this season.

"They saw how well we played against Utah so they wanted to jump out on us quick at home, and that's what they did," said Clippers guard Darrick Martin.

With Denver clinging to a 41-38 lead and less than three minutes left in the second quarter, Bryant Stith sank a pair of foul shots to spark a decisive 13-3 run. Van Exel fed Billups for a layup and hit a runner to build a 47-38 lead. That duo hooked up again with less than a minute left before the break as Billups buried a 3-pointer off a feed from Van Exel.

After Stith sank two more free throws, Van Exel drained a 22-footer from the right wing as the buzzer sounded to give Denver a 54-41 halftime cushion. Van Exel scored 10 of his 15 first-half points in the second quarter.

Stith chipped in 15 points and Danny Fortson grabbed 15 rebounds, atoning for seven turnovers and an 0-for-5 effort from the field.

Troy Hudson contributed 16 points for the Clippers, but the team's top offensive threats were relatively quiet. Leading scorer Maurice Taylor fouled out with 10 points, Lamond Murray had only seven on 2-of-7 shooting and rookie Michael Olowokandi shot only 1-of-11 from the field for seven points.
