Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Glenn Robinson drained a 20-foot jumper with 3.1 seconds remaining as the Milwaukee Bucks rallied for a dramatic 107-105 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Ray Allen drove into the lane and dished to a wide-open Robinson along the right wing, where he nailed the go-ahead shot over the outstretched arm of Juwan Howard.

"It was a broken-down play," Robinson said. "We wanted to get the ball to the post or Ray. Haywoode (Workman) got the ball, got it to Ray and then got it to me. I just let it go and was glad I got it to go down."

Washington had one last chance to win it but Calbert Cheaney's 3-point attempt as time expired banked off the rim.

The Wizards matched their biggest lead at 100-90 with 3:15 to play after Rod Strickland made a short jumper. Fueled by 10 points from Allen, the Bucks scored the next 13 points to take a 103-100 lead with 29 seconds remaining.

Strickland hit a leaner in the lane to draw the Wizards within one before Haywoode Workman sank a pair of free throws to push the lead back to three with 20 seconds to go.

However, Strickland nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 11 seconds left to knot the score, 105-105. He finished with 17 points and 12 assists.

"We just didn't play well tonight down the stretch," Strickland said. "We had problems with the half court trap. It's a frustrating game. We should have won, but we didn't."

One night after attending his alma mater's first NCAA Tournament title, Allen scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter. Allen played at Connecticut from 1993-96 before declaring for the NBA draft following his junior season.

Chris Gatling scored 15 points off the bench for the Bucks, who won for just the fourth time in their last 13 meetings with the Wizards.

Mitch Richmond scored 23 points and Tracy Murray added 20 for Washington, which lost for the seventh time in 11 games.

"It was a tough loss. We had control, up 10 and we lost the ballgame," Richmond said. "We did a lot well tonight and should have come out with the victory. This was the toughest loss of the season."

After Strickland's basket put the Wizards ahead by 10 with just over three minutes left, Robinson sank a foul shot and Allen scored eight straight points to close the deficit to 100-99 with 1:32 to go.

Ervin Johnson's layup with 64 seconds left gave Milwaukee its first lead of the quarter.

Allen connected on 8-of-12 shots, including all three of his attempts from 3-point range. The Bucks shot an impressive 54 percent (40-of-74).

Milwaukee also got its best game from Gatling since acquiring him in a three-team trade from New Jersey. The forward made 8-of-9 shots to lead a bench that contributed 42 points. Dell Curry added 13 points off the bench.

Murray was just as good for the Wizards, who got 43 points from their reserves. He was 7-of-9 from the floor and made all four of his attempts from beyond the arc. As a team, the Wizards shot 50 percent (44-of-88) and went 10-of-20 from 3-point range.

"It was an excellent game and both teams shot well tonight," Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "Mentally, we made bad decisions in control. We lost focus when all we had to do was win. We have no one to blame but ourselves."

Washington held a 48-46 lead at the half. The Bucks used a 14-6 surge to start the third quarter to take their biggest lead at 60-54 on Tim Thomas' short jumper with 7:57 left.

The Wizards answered with a 14-2 burst, capped by Richmond's 20-footer, to take a 68-62 lead with 4:52 left in the quarter. Washington held a 77-74 advantage entering the final period.

Workman continued to sparkle at point guard for Milwaukee, finishing with 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Workman missed all but four games over the last two seasons due to a knee injury. He was waived earlier this season by Indiana before signing with Milwaukee.
