Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- San Antonio Spurs star forward Tim Duncan set the tone early and the Seattle SuperSonics failed to respond.

Duncan scored 12 of his 26 points in the opening 12 minutes, when the red-hot Spurs opened a 13-point lead en route to a 95-87 triumph over the slumping SuperSonics.

In a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions, David Robinson added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who never trailed and won for the 14th time in 16 contests. Avery Johnson added 14 points for San Antonio (20-10).

"We started out sharp, got the lead and just kind of parked it," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "We spent the rest of the night trying to get the momentum back."

"Our confidence was low at the beginning of the season," Robinson said. "Everyone was questioning what they were doing and what their roles were. You have to give credit to the coaching staff, they kept everything together. But when you win, everyone is happier."

Gary Payton scored 15 points and Dale Ellis added 14 for the Sonics, who are 9-14 after opening the season with six straight victories. Seattle also fell to 4-10 on the road and 4-10 against teams with winning records.

"The bad start tonight killed tonight," said Sonics coach Paul Westphal. "We did a lot of things. We beat them on the boards but just could not shoot the ball tonight. It's a very frustrating thing to have happen to you."

Payton contributed to the Sonics' awful start. He was just 1-of-6 from the field and had just three assists over the first 24 minutes.

Seattle's starting frontcourt of Billy Owens, Detlef Schrempf and Olden Polynice was nearly as inept in the opening half, combining for 12 points on 6-of-15 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds.

"We didn't shoot well tonight and that's unfortunate," said Schrempf. "You have to give them some credit, they played some good defense. They took us out of what we wanted to do tonight."

Sean Elliott opened the scoring for San Antonio 14 seconds into the contest, burying a 14-footer. Duncan followed with a pair of mid-range jumpers and a dunk.

Seattle finally got on the scoreboard nearly three minutes into the contest when Polynice had a dunk off a miss by Payton. Hersey Hawkins followed with two free throws for Seattle but Robinson hit a free throw, Johnson buried a jumper, and Duncan dunked for a 13-4 advantage. Robinson capped the 7-0 spurt with a 15-footer with 6:11 to go.

After Ellis hit two free throws with 2:18 left to pull Seattle within 20-13, the Spurs scored seven of the final eight points to close the quarter.

Schrempf finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while rookie Vladimir Stepania continued to impress with 12 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes.

The Spurs scored 20 second-chance points to just one for the SuperSonics.
