Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Damon Stoudamire scored 21 points as the Portland Trail Blazers easily overcame the loss of suspended guard Isaiah Rider and defeated the Sacramento Kings, 100-86.

Rider was suspended without pay for a league-high third time this season after entering the stands late in Tuesday night's loss at Golden State. It is unclear why Rider entered the stands with about two minutes to go.

Sacramento scored nine straight points to pull within 80-73 with five minutes to play. But Stoudamire scored seven points during a 16-9 run that put the Blazers ahead 96-82 with 2:01 left and helped them nail down their league-high 24th win.

Brian Grant and Greg Anthony added 16 points apiece as Portland won for the seventh time in eight games and completed a four-game season series sweep of Sacramento.

"It felt great after that disappointing loss (Tuesday) night," Grant said. "It was one of those games you sit around thinking about we would of, could of, should of. Tonight, we were able to get a win and feel a little bit better about ourselves."

Rasheed Wallace and Walt Williams rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Blazers by netting 13 and 12 points, respectively, off the bench. That duo helped Portland win its fifth straight at the Rose Garden and improve to a league-best 14-1 at home.

"Our defense was solid all night long and our bench gave us a big lift," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We did a good job of spacing and spreading the court and we had a lot of cutters going to the basket that gave us some easy opportunities."

Portland increased its lead in the Pacific Division over the idle Los Angeles Lakers to four games, including five in the loss column. At 24-6, the Blazers lead the Utah Jazz by 2 1/2 games for the league's best record.

The Kings could not overcome the absence of superstar Chris Webber, who missed his third straight game with the flu. Webber leads Sacramento at 20 points and 13 rebounds per game.

Vlade Divac netted 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Kings, who lost for the sixth time in nine games despite outrebounding the Blazers, 57-39, with a 19-10 edge on the offensive boards.

Sacramento committed 17 turnovers to Portland's six, a disturbing statistic to Kings coach Rick Adelman and point guard Jason Williams.

"The turnovers hurt us," Adelman said. "We took quick shots and against a team like Portland, it's a killer. You can't afford to do that. We weren't very good offensively tonight."

"It's just part of the game," Williams said. "They played pressure defense and caused a lot of turnovers, but when we turn the ball over we always have a chance to get back on defense and try to get it back. We've got to learn from our mistakes."

The Blazers reeled off seven straight points in the second quarter, including five by Anthony, to grab a 54-42 halftime lead. Divac led the Kings with 14 points in the first half, while Grant had 10 for the Blazers.

Portland used a 12-2 spurt in the third quarter to seize a 71-52 edge with 3:34 remaining. Wallace and Williams each buried 3-pointers during that spurt.

The Kings countered with eight straight points to close the period trailing 73-62. Lawrence Funderburke scored the final six points of the quarter for Sacramento.
