Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored all eight of his fourth-quarter points in a 3:45 span as the Dallas Mavericks pulled away for a 93-84 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Finley, who finished with 22 points, triggered an 8-0 burst with a 19-footer with 4:38 to play. Dallas scored 12 of the game's final 16 points and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Three of the Mavericks' 11 wins have come at the expense of the Clippers, the worst team in the league.

Gary Trent had 23 points and 11 rebounds while Shawn Bradley contributed 16, 13 and five blocked shots. Point guard Steve Nash contributed 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Mavericks, who won for just the third time in their last 11 contests.

"Every game is a must-win if we want to get that eighth spot," said Trent, noting the Mavericks are five games behind Phoenix for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. "We just needed to win. The last few weeks I have been working on backing people into the post and not trying to score but rather to draw the double team."

Reserves Lamond Murray, Eric Piatkowski and Troy Hudson combined for 41 points for the Clippers, who have lost three straight overall and fell to 1-15 on the road this season. Hudson had 11 points and seven assists for Los Angeles, which has lost six of its last seven to Dallas.

"We didn't do a good job of executing and winning the game," said Hudson. "They played some good defense, we got some great shots. We just didn't get them to fall. They came out and played very aggressive."

A 3-pointer by Hudson pulled the Clippers within 81-80 with 7:17 remaining, but the teams traded empty possessions until Finley's 19-footer 2:39 later. Los Angeles rookie center Michael Olowokandi was called for offensive goaltending on the Clippers next possession, and A.C. Green added an 18-footer to make it 85-80 at the 2:35 mark.

Finley hit a nine-footer and driving lay-in to extend the lead to 89-80 with 2:16 remaining, and the Clippers came no closer than five thereafter.

"Well, I just get touches, coach calls my numbers and I just have to make the most of those situations," said Finley. "Shots were going down."

The Mavs led by as many as 12 in the first quarter, but squandered all of their lead as the Clippers took a 45-39 lead with 1:31 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Murray.

A 3-pointer by Hudson gave Los Angeles a 65-63 advantage with 4:06 to go in the third quarter, but Finley had four points in a 12-5 spurt to close the quarter, providing the Mavericks a 75-70 lead entering the final 12 minutes.

"It was big, it's easy for us to go out and have intensity against a team like the Lakers," said Finley. "Going against a team like the Clippers, who are struggling, eventually you have to be focused. I think for the most part, we were right there."

Dallas shot 51 percent (37-of-73) from the field as coach Don Nelson used nine players. The Mavericks also outrebounded the Clippers, 44-36, and Trent dished out six assists.

Los Angeles shot less than 40 percent (34-of-86) and attempted only 10 free throws. Olowokandi, who shot 5-of-11 from the field, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
