Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Grant Hill had 18 points and 11 assists as the red-hot Detroit Pistons posted their sixth straight victory and embarrassed the Chicago Bulls for the second time this season, 107-75.

The win, combined with Indiana's loss to Toronto, pulled the Pistons (20-12) within one-half game of the Pacers for the top spot in the Central Division.

The Pistons never trailed, dazzling the Bulls with a selfless display of passing throughout the contest. Detroit collected a season-high 38 assists, including a franchise-record 16 in the first quarter.

"It was a great win," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "We were passing the ball, moving ourselves around and getting everyone involved. We played hard defense and we're playing unselfishly."

Leading 10-6 with nine minutes remaining in the opening period, Detroit put away Chicago with a 23-6 run, capped by Jerome Williams' thunderous dunk, to open a 33-12 bulge with 2:08 left.

"We got up by 20 early and then we got a little bit relaxed," said Williams. "We're a better team right now, but you still have to play hard to beat a team like Chicago because they are not going to quit."

"Grant Hill makes everyone around him better," added Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "I think he's taken his game to a level where those guys feed off him. Detroit plays as well as anyone we've seen. I think 21 of their first 22 shots were layups. They spread the ball and shoot well. They have great spacing and are willing to make the extra pass."

Hill had 17 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds as the Pistons routed Chicago, 108-78, on March 2, handing the Bulls their worst home defeat since moving into the United Center in 1994. Detroit has won the last three meetings between the clubs after dropping 22 of the previous 23 encounters.

Joe Dumars scored 18 points and Don Reid added 14 for Detroit, which was playing its third game in as many days. The Pistons have won five in a row at home.

Dickey Simpkins and Mark Bryant scored 14 points apiece for Chicago, which has lost five of its last six games and dropped to 4-12 on the road.

Pistons forward Christian Laettner, who has played just nine games this season due to a ruptured right Achilles, left the game in the third quarter due to an elbow from Bryant as the two went up for a rebound. Laettner, who scored 11 points, was diagnosed with a fractured rib and is expected to be out at least two weeks.

"I just slipped and went to catch myself and something funky happened," Laettner said. "Sometimes when you got to post up hard, the guy isn't there. This hurt me because the team is going good. It was all coming around for me. This hurt more than my Achilles. I tried playing but the rib kept popping out."

"It hurts losing him but we have to have guys step up," Gentry added.

Rookie Kornel David collected 12 points for the Bulls, who shot 45 percent (30-of-67) but managed just 6-of-9 at the line.

Bison Dele scored 12 points in 13 minutes on 6-of-7 shooting for the Pistons, who shot a blistering 60 percent (42-of-70) and held a 36-29 advantage on the boards.

Williams collected 11 points and Lindsey Hunter added 10 for Detroit, which had seven players in double figures.

"It's our third in a row and you look around the league and all the better teams are winning those tripleheaders," Hunter said. "If we want to be considered one of the better teams in the league, we have to do it, too."

Detroit guard Jerry Stackhouse missed his second straight game due to a sprained right ankle.

Simpkins vented some of the Bulls' frustration when he threw Hill to the floor on a layup attempt with 11:23 to play. Hill responded by shoving Simpkins and was slapped with a technical foul.

"It was a basic drive and I fouled him hard," Simpkins said. "Grant Hill was getting open looks at the basket and he was driving all night. If I fouled hard, it's part of the game."

Fomrer Bull Jud Buechler hit a 3-pointer and Hill and Reid had emphatic dunks on consecutive trips as Detroit put an exclamation mark on the blowout, opening a 96-70 cushion with 6:31 to go.
