Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Dikembe Mutombo and the Atlanta Hawks spoiled Shareef Abdur-Rahim's return to Georgia.

Mutombo scored a season-high 24 points as the Hawks overcame the absence of leading scorer Steve Smith and rallied for an 84-81 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

"We came out very strong and played hard," Mutombo said. "We tried to do the best we could, especially after losing our leading scorer."

Atlanta scored its final seven points from the line, including a pair by Mutombo that provided a 79-74 lead with 44 seconds remaining.

After Atlanta's Alan Henderson missed 1-of-2 from the line with a second remaining, the Grizzlies had a chance to force overtime. But Vancouver was out of the timeouts and had to go the length of the court. Atlanta's Grant Long knocked away the inbounds pass at the top of the key, preserving the win.

"I think what is happening is that we are getting into these situations and we're getting tentative," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "It's almost like we're playing not to lose rather than playing to win."

The 6-8 Smith, who is 21st in the NBA in scoring at 18.6 points per game, was placed on the injured list prior to the game with a sprained left knee and is expected to miss seven to 10 days. He sat out six games in February with a sprained right knee.

Abdur-Rahim, a native of nearby Marietta, Georgia, scored 24 points for the Grizzlies, who have lost 20 of their last 22 and fell to just 1-14 on the road.

"It's frustrating because I think we're out there playing our tails off," Abdur-Rahim said. "We can't really come up with (a big play) when he need it. (We can't) finish games off, so it's real frustrating."

Atlanta snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-0 all-time against Vancouver.

Vancouver used a 13-0 spurt to open a 55-46 lead with 4:27 remaining in the third period and took a 60-54 edge into the final 12 minutes.

Atlanta's Tyrone Corbin scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and Long added eight of his 14 in the fourth period.

The Hawks scored just four points in the first eight minutes of the third period until Corbin made consecutive 3-pointers. Long hit two free throws to bring Atlanta within 57-54 with 1:48 remaining.

"If our energy is up high we are effective on both ends of the floor," Corbin said. "Tonight, myself and Grant and some other guys came off the bench and gave us a great push."

"What the thing Ty does is he understands everything we're doing defensively," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens added. "When you are in a run-and-jump situation, he is there and he helps. He hit those big shots. That got us going."

After shooting just 22 percent in the third quarter, Atlanta came alive in the final period as Mutombo's jump hook capped a 10-0 run that gave the Hawks a 68-64 edge with 5:49 left.

Corbin was 6-of-11 from the field in 27 minutes off the bench.

"I was just coming out and trying to give some energy to the team," he said. "We were a little flat there for a minute and they made a run earlier in the third quarter. We just wanted to come in and bring some energy."

Vancouver reeled off six straight points to take its last lead at 70-68 on a steal and layup by rookie Mike Bibby, who had 14 of his 20 points in the second half. Atlanta took the lead for good at 71-70 when Anthony Johnson converted a technical for an illegal defense call with 3:36 remaining.

After Vancouver closed to 81-79 on a 3-pointer by rookie Felipe Lopez with seven seconds remaining, Mookie Blaylock made a pair from the line.

Vancouver's Cherokee Parks followed in Abdur-Rahim's miss before Henderson gave the Grizzlies a chance by missing his first foul shot.

Grizzlies starting forward Tony Massenburg left in the second quarter with back spasms and did not return.
