Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- As if the Los Angeles Lakers don't have enough stars, Marv Albert is now announcing their games.

Glen Rice, the most recent big-name acquisition, sank a 17-foot jumper with 7.1 seconds remaining as the Lakers extended the home woes of the Phoenix Suns with a 91-90 victory in Albert's first national broadcast in nearly two years.

All-Star Kobe Bryant sank a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left that gave the Lakers an 89-85 advantage. Tom Gugliotta hit a pair of foul shots 11 seconds later to draw Phoenix within two.

Bryant missed inside on the ensuing possession and Danny Manning grabbed the rebound and found Jason Kidd with an outlet pass. Kidd drove the length of the court for a layup, drawing a foul on Derek Harper. After a timeout, Kidd calmly sank the free throw to give the Suns a 90-89 lead with 11 seconds left.

The Lakers called timeout and went to Rice, another All-Star who was acquired last month in a five-player deal with the Charlotte Hornets for these situations. He converted the winning shot from along the right wing.

"What happened was that we had two guys curling off the top of the key," said Rice of the winning play. "I saw a little daylight, went to get the ball and when I saw it was Manning, I went to give a quick show to the baseline and pulled up on him and just rose up over him. I knew it was in. It was a wide-open shot and I have to hit that."

"It was a play to get the ball in the hands of either Kobe or Glen in case of a foul," Los Angeles coach Kurt Rambis said. "They were our best free throw shooters and they are obviously very good creators, too."

Phoenix had one last chance and went to George McCloud, who threw up an airball from the top of the key as time expired.

"It was designed to go into Danny (Manning)," Kidd said. "He came out very high because of their defense. George had to put up a tough shot based on the defense that they played on us. They played good defense all night but we fought back. That's a key to give ourselves a chance to win at the end. But we have to execute at the end."

Rice scored 23 points and superstar center Shaquille O'Neal, who was on the bench in the final minute, added 21 for the Lakers, who have won three straight and five of their last seven games.

"We found a way to win," O'Neal said. "We played pretty good in spurts and then there were times where we didn't play defense at all. We kept it close there and our shooters saved the day. I'm glad we got a deadly shooter like Glen Rice."

Cliff Robinson scored a season-high 30 points and Kidd collected 23 and nine assists for Phoenix, which concluded a 1-3 homestand. The Suns are 7-10 at home after going 30-11 at America West Arena last season.

The game marked the return to the national spotlight for Albert, who announced the game for the TNT cable network. It was his first NBA telecast since Game Six of the 1997 Finals. He has been the radio voice for the New York Knicks this season.

Considered among the best play-by-play men, Albert was fired by NBC in 1997 when he pleaded guilty to a charge of misdemeanor assault and battery. He signed a multi-year deal with Turner Sports in February and tonight's game was the first of six the sportscaster will work for TNT and TBS this season.

"I took nothing for granted at all," Albert said of his return to broadcasting. "I'm thrilled with the way things have begun to get back into place. I think back to a year-and-a-half ago and had no idea what the future would hold."

Trailing 71-70 after three quarters, the Lakers scored the first eight points of the fourth, capped by Derek Fisher's 3-pointer to take a 78-71 lead with 9:36 to play.

Phoenix regained its composure and scored the next five points on McCloud's shot from beyond the arc and Robinson's layup, closing to 78-76 with 6 1/2 minutes left.

McCloud went 3-of-10 from the floor and scored 13 points to lead the Phoenix reserves.

Rick Fox sank a 16-footer to give the Lakers a 67-60 advantage with 2:42 left in the third quarter. But the Suns closed an explosive final two minutes on a 11-3 surge to take a one-point lead into the final period.

Fox was ejected with 18 seconds left in the third quarter after picking up a pair of technical fouls for arguing a foul call.

Suns forward Chris Morris, who earned a technical just over a minute earlier, was sent to the locker room with 11:23 left in the fourth quarter after a second technical.

Los Angeles took its biggest lead at 38-24 with 4:39 left in the first half after J.R. Reid nailed an 18-footer. He scored 14 points.

But fueled by Robinson's 21 points in the first half, the Suns were able to close to 44-38 at intermission. Robinson finished 10-of-14 from the floor as Phoenix shot 43 percent (31-of-73).

Rice connected on 10-of-16 shots and O'Neal was 8-of-14 from the floor for Los Angeles, which shot 48 percent (36-of-75) and held a 40-33 rebounding edge.

Dennis Rodman led the Lakers with 15 boards.
